D attends a LAC and had to drop a couple of courses when she had mono. She’s home for the summer, working part-time and wants to try and catch up on a few credits. She was thinking of online courses through our local community college but missed their summer admissions deadline. So I’ve been wading through websites trying to find schools where she can take a course or 2. It’s been a real struggle finding something especially since many colleges with online classes seem to focus on full-time students. So any suggestions are welcome!
She needs to ask her full time U if they will accept credit taken at any U other than that U towards grad credit. Some schools are very particular and will NOT while others will with prior approval of the U and courses.
USCal only accepted in person courses D took at local CC and U, including some German language courses she took in the summer.
IF the LAC will accept the CC coursework, she could try asking the CC if she could get an exception for late application due to mono.
It may be possible to take courses online as “nondegree” status. I was able to do this for a few graduate classes that I took to update my skills. I had to call the online college though to set this up though because that information was noton the website. I could take a maximum of 3 classes as nondegree.
My son attends a LAC. He wanted to take a couple of courses at a local university this summer and he had to get authorization in advance from his college that they would accept the courses as equivalent. He had to contact the summer professors and submit the syllabus for his courses for the two departments for which he wanted credit at his LAC. He was approved in both cases before the spring semester ended.
If she gets permission from her college, University of Maryland University College has quite a few classes available. It is a fully acredited online university, with 24 hour support available (many of its students are military personnel on deployment or stationed all over the world). One of mine, who was a University of Maryland - College Park student has taken quite a few UMUC classes over the years.

@Himom I don’t know how many years ago your students attended, but USC (if that is what USCal is, unless you are referring to Berkeley) does accept online cc courses. Students can check the articulation agreements.
OP I would call your D’s LAC and ask or have her ask her advisor instead of shopping around - they can tell you what works and doesn’t for that school.
I supposed it depends – in 2009, USoCal didn’t accept one of D’s online CC courses but accepted her other courses. It’s always best to double check and get approval from whatever U the student wants to get the degree from to be sure the course will be accepted and count towards graduation. Requirements rather than being sadly surprised. Our D did not attend CA CCs, so she had to check with the U. Her CC had never sent anyone to USCal. D has long since graduated–I just think it’s always best to get written confirmation that what the student proposes to do will work out as expected.
D asked for permission at her LAC last month and was told that she was allowed to take a couple of courses at our local CC over the summer; there’s a list of types of courses that they’ll accept for credit. She was thinking about taking a specific biology course (with lab) and her advisor at her LAC approved it. @NorthernMom61, yes, we’re looking at non-degree status.
But she decided (with my ok and also the agreement of a family friend who teaches at the local CC) that she wasn’t up to going in to class and lab from 5:30 to 10 PM 4 nights a week for a month. I told her to look at the CC registration requirements for online classes and unfortunately I was too sick and busy to follow up on their registration deadlines myself which is why we’re looking for other options. Yes, @scotlandcalling, she needs to call the Dean at her LAC on Tuesday to check on what what will be approved.
@crepes your kid needs to check in with school obviously. USC has a database that tells you what courses have been approved in the past and what they are considered “equivalent” to. It’s a fairly easy process, but I don’t know if all schools have that. SC. for instances, approves many courses on-line, but things with Labs must be in person and some advanced match classes are divided into 2 courses by many CCs. Your mileage may vary.
I noticed in passing this week that the University of Toledo and James Madison University both seem to still be open to applications for guest summer students, and both have some online classes. UT’s website specifically mentions guest students who are home for the summer; JMU’s is a little more vague.
@planit, thanks, I looked at JMU’s site and was able to find the information but I decided to keep looking a bit longer because their instate tuition is not unreasonable, $400+ per credit, but their OOS tuition is $935 per credit, so a 3 credit summer class would be $2800.
However that gave me the idea to look at our own state system (SUNY) and I was able to find a couple of campuses, Albany and Oneonta, with pages and forms for visiting summer students. Our in-state tuition is $875 for a 3 credit course and $1150 for 4 credits. OOS is comparable to the JMU rate.
