Looking for colleges

I believe you are exactly right about the EFC being split mom2college.

OP - Tulane has an outstanding finance major. See the following thread and go to post #4. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/tulane-university/778049-business-tulane.html</a></p>

Also take a look at the following where Tulane was ranked #4 by Entrepreneur Magazine for (duh) entrepreneurship. http://www.afrikmotion.com/TEA/tea-fall09-newsletter.pdf</a></p>

If you get 2050-2200 SATs and keep those grades up, you will most likely get a good merit scholarship from Tulane also. $20,000-$25,000 (this year) for someone with your stats, depending on those test scores.

Hope that helps

Simon123, I would say that there are lots of people who call themselves “christians” at Clemson, one of the biggest organizations on campus is Clemson FCA (Fellowship Of Christian Athletes). However, let’s just say that if a christian who actually practices and follows their beliefs came here, they would be shocked and probably condemn this school haha, I think it mostly has to do that people here grew up in Christian Baptist families and went to church as a kid but once they’re in college they still hold on to part of their beliefs but it in no way feels like a christian college, just a regular state university with everything that goes on there.

part of daily life, like religion is at a Jesuit college.

LOL…religion is NOT part of daily life at a Jesuit college. Who told you that? Many Jews, Muslims, Protestants, and atheits happily attend many Jesuit colleges.

Very true…

If you get your SAT to at least 1400 (math + CR), you could get big merit scholarships from many schools that have good B-schools. :)

But, also take the ACT!!! You may do better on that!

:)

Have your sister re-apply for financial aid. Now with 2 in school, her EFC will change. (and, have your parents put “your share” of education dollars in an education account for you, so that it won’t look like it’s only available for your sister.)

@Fallenchemist- Yeah, I’ve heard great things about Tulane’s finance and business programs, so I’m looking at them pretty strongly as well. I wouldn’t expect quite that much money, though. They offered my sister $27,000 a year last year, and her grades, GPA, and rank were all definitely better than mine, although my hopeful SAT scores are better than she got I think.

@mom, yes I should have been more clear. I know many Jesuit schools don’t have religion as a part of daily life. In fact, I think Davidson is a Jesuit-based school, and I know my sister doesn’t have much religion in her daily life. I was talking more along the lines of a BYU or Oral Roberts, very conservative kind of school.

And yes, I plan on taking the ACT.

Hi Simon - They probably offered your sister $24K, that was the top award last year unless you competed for and got the DHS, but for “automatic” merit awards it was something like $17K, $20K and $24K. This year those 3 went up to $20K, $22K and $25K, and they added a fourth one at $15K. It is always hard to predict, but I think with a strong second semester this year and some really decent test scores, you might be surprised. FYI if you can pull off a 32-34 on the ACT, that should also improve your chances at the higher awards. In any case, take a good look at those programs in Finance, go visit if you can, and see what you think. Good luck!

Maybe it was $24,000… I remember it was mid-20s, and I think it was some combination of financial aid and scholarship money, though I am not too sure exactly.

Another question- Say I do really well on my SATs, like a 2100-2200 for example. Would the ACTs matter at that point? Like if I already had a 2150 SAT score, would getting like a 33 on the ACT increase my chance of a scholarship/increase the value of a scholarship, or would the 2150 be like the key factor? (FWIW, I plan to take the ACT either way.) And conversely, if I got like a 2150 SAT and then got only like a 25 ACT do the colleges find out and lower a possible scholarship, or can I basically not send that 25 out and not have it known?

Well, if you got a 2150 and then a 25, I wouldn’t send the 25. You don’t have to send anything before you know your scores. Here is a table that relates the ACT and SAT scores [SAT-ACT Conversion chart](http://teachers.sduhsd.k12.ca.us/lccounseling/SAT-ACT_Conversion_chart.htm)

In your example, the 2150 would be a 32-33.

So if they are close, send both. Otherwise send the best one.

Does anyone know how hard UVA is to get into? I knew it’s a great school, but the more I hear about it, the more people make it sound impossible to get into.
