Looking for Engineering Schools that fits my stats in the Mid West

I have been looking into Computer Science and other engineering programs, i posted on the chances board and realized my GPA will bring me down for my schools that i wanted to attend- Wisconson, UIUC, Purdue Lafayette. So now I am looking into maybe other schools that i would most likely have a better chance with.
GPA: 3.48 ish Wieghted: 4.2
ACT:31
Extracurriculars: The basic sports, work, honors societies
So any other engi. schools that i have a better chance of getting into?
Internships and availability of work. Honestly i just want to go to a school where i will be able to get a job. What is the main difference between the schools i listed above and a school a tier below? Will my job prospects differ, assuming i get good grades.

The chances board is often wildly inaccurate. Frankly, I’d be shocked if you weren’t accepted into Purdue.

Iowa State is a very good choice for computer science and engineering in the Midwest, as are Missouri University of Science and Technology, Mizzou, KU, and a wide variety of other schools.

thanks whenhen, i know friends that have gotten into Wisconson with the same grades and lower ACT.

With your stats, you are in at Purdue. Wisconsin is a match and UIUC is a reach. Minnesota-Twin Cities is another good safety (and a great value) and PSU-University Park is a match.

THANKS! I was getting worried, but are you guys sure i dont want false hope. All my classes were Honors and AP and i really buckled down this last semester.

There are no guarantees of course, but assuming you fill in the application and submit all required documents early in the process, I think you are in at Purdue and Minnesota, and have solid chances with Wisconsin and PSU. UIUC is tricky.

Maybe Case Western?

Can you afford all those OOS public Us?

i am going to try to pay the some of the tuition and my parents will help too. I really haven’t looked at cost, as i want to see where i stand. Out of curiosty, how expensive is wisconson or purdue out of state? 40,000?

You need to ask your parents how much they’ll pay each year.

How much can you pay each year?

You (the student) can only borrow $5500 for frosh year.

Yes, these OOS publics cost about $40k per year.

I am a very responsible kid, i am working 15 hours a week, and will work two jobs over the summer. I am planning to pay 10,000 which would leave 30,000. This is how much i would pay if i were to get into UIUC in state. How are scholarships at purdue anyone know?

Iowa State University and University of Minneosta-Twin Cities are great for engineering and cheaper than the other midwest universities. If you are willing to come up to Northeast, look at University at Buffalo.

Be sure to check out the cost of attendance on each individual website. S applied to Purdue - his stats were ACT 32 UW GPA 4.0 weighted 4.4. He was accepted but received no merit aid with those stats. He was offered a menu of loans ( our EFC is very very low). Notice Purdue has an additional $1550/year fee for engineering. The Purdue representative who visited his HS stated they simply do not have a lot of $$ to give away. We calculated Purdue to run about 47K/year. This included about 2k (we’re in CA) in travel and misc. fees.

Try the net price calculator on each college’s web site to get an estimate of cost and financial aid. Do not expect good financial aid at out-of-state public schools (unfortunately, UIUC’s in-state financial aid is not very good either).

Remember that loans greater than Stafford loans are riskier and require a co-signer anyway.

Like dietz199 said…out of states are expensive!

I’m a junior right now, but I’ve done a fair amount of research and I can tell you some things I know of. First off, there are some private universities that are just as good if not better than these out of states.

Take for example these private schools: Marquette, Saint Louis University, Carnegie Mellon, Rose-Hulman, Illinois Institute of Technology.

I personally am looking at Marquette a lot for engineering, it’s a great university, the campus fits my ideals, cost will be decent, and Marquette basically pioneered co-ops, giving an awesome opportunity for students!

Good luck on your college search!

Don’t put too much stock in what you’ve heard on the “chances” board. I never even enter that part of the forum. Most of the people that “chance” others in there aren’t really qualified to do so…and are simply going off of their own opinions.

Most of the schools you listed are likely within your reach. UIUC might be a little bit of a stretch, but UIUC engineering is a fairly hard school to get into for anyone. It’s definitely not impossible.

Minnesota and Iowa State were my two suggestions but they’ve already been nailed.

Alexandre, I’m pretty sure he’s in at Purdue, but I know of a friend with similar stats who just got rejected, but was accepted to Wisconsin. He may be an outlier, but I wouldn’t declare Purdue as a real safety.

UIC is also a decent option if you’re interested in city life at a very low cost (15k-18k/year instate, I think?). Marquette is a bit expensive at around 45k/year, but they give a lot in merit scholarships.

Unfortunately for the OP, Illinois schools are horrible at meeting financial need for in state students. Both SIUs offer computer science and a few other ABET accredited engineering programs, all while costing less than UIUC. NIU offers a few engineering programs including electrical and mechanical engineering.

Will your parents contribute anything towards your education? If not, and their EFC is quite low, you might want to look into private schools as they can often be cheaper than in state Illinois ones after financial aid.

If you’re willing to look out of the Midwest, U Wyoming, U Alabama, and U Missouri may be relatively affordable assuming you move to cheaper off campus housing. Getting in state tuition in Missouri is remarkably easy

My parents will help with the costs, i just wanted to know if i had a good shot at the universites that i listed and if there were any other schools i should look into.

Purdue, Wisconsin and Penn State will cost roughly $40k per year. Minnesota will cost only $30k per year. UIUC will cost closer to $50k per year. In all cases, I am including room and board, books, transportation etc…
