This is my first post ever... I am a parent of a high school junior, who is looking for a great college that will satisfy 2 majors. My daughter is a talented vocalist (alto) and an excellent writer. She was lucky enough to have had a Westminster Trained Chorale Director and has performed at Carnegie Hall (with John Rutter by request) every year with her Chorale. They have a smaller Jazz choir as well. She also is in all the Drama Productions and has had the female lead for the past 2 years. Enough bragging.

She is interested in a career in Communications (unsure of specifics) and probably a minor in vocal performance (classical) (maybe a BA).

Most of the schools we are looking at have either a strong department in one of the areas.

She is just about straight A's all honors classes. SAT's are good (her top score 730 in writing).
These are the schools we've seen so far. She loves the DC Area and doesn't prefer cold climate.
BU (liked)
American (liked)
Ithaca (liked)
Tufts
Penn State
U of Penn ( she said people didn't look happy, too competitive)
Syracuse (didn't like, didn't offer a vocal performance minor)
U of Maryland (liked)

we think that Northwestern would be good but not sure her SAT's will be high enough

Would she consider a women’s college? Many have music majors with excellent performance instructors, and great English depts.

Smith and Mount Holyoke offer the opportunity to perform with groups on campus, as well opportunity to perform with 5-college consortium groups. Wouldn’t have mentioned these schools if only BU and American had been on the “like” list. But since Ithaca was there…thought these schools should be considered, too.

Also look at University of Cincinnati. Climate similar to DC! Difficult to get into for performance, but not as difficult for Arts and Science. If she’s not applying for CCM, UC should be a safety for her, and she may even get scholarship money.

I don’t think she wants a women’s college. But I will look at University of Cincinnati. Thanks for the quick reply! Do you have any opinion of the Music Program at U of Maryland? Didn’t really get a feel for the music department at American either- yet the Communications Department seemed great!

Northwestern is an excellent choice; she should look into it and ask which is the better route for her - auditioning for the music school and then double major in the school of communications or vice versa.

One advantage of Boston is that it’s full of music. Besides BU’s School of Music, there’s NEC & Boston Conservatory, plus Longy at Harvard and lots else, including a number of smaller orchestras and ensembles. So there are a lot of teachers, lots of performance potential.

It’s hard to think of a single school that has both strengths. Other than BU. Rochester, for example, has great music and they do have a journalism track inside the English major, but that may not be what you mean.

I suggest you post this question in the music forum, especially if your D would consider a dual degree. You’ll get great feedback from experienced parents and students.

USC has very strong music and communications, and lots of music performance opportunity in Los Angeles. She should be a competitive applicant there.
