I spoke with a professional opera singer today, who advised me to search out some smaller schools (he knows D will be looking at the bigger, more known schools) with great faculty.

His points are that the lesser known music colleges, with smaller populations can very often have more one on one time with students. Also, they are likely to be generous in their financial assistance, because so many VPs look to IU and the likes....

Any suggestions I should look to? I searched CC and have Bard, Smith & Williams as possibilities....but, there have to be more top notch programs that just don't get the publicity the better known ones do...
thanks!

Take a look at Chapman in Ca, they can be very generous with the right student. Also, take a look at small programs at larger schools. UCLA only has around 30 voice students (total grad and undergrad).-----however, OOS tuition might be tough and it is a very tough admit.

Here are some more LAC’s and smaller Universities with good to excellent music programs. I am not sure of the relative strength of the voice teachers, so you will need to research that yourself.

Baldwin-Wallace College
Butler University
DePauw University
Furman University
Ithaca College
Lawrence University
Loyola University (New Orleans)
Lynn University
Saint Olaf College (more noted for choral singing than opera)
SUNY Potsdam
SUNY Purchase

This might sound kind of random, but maybe take a look at Luther College in Decorah, IA. I believe some successful opera singers have come out of the program. They are very generous with scholarships for the right person.

OCU mostly looked at for MT, but always works from a classical base, and has some very good voice teachers.

Regardless of school, large, small, well known or not, select the school for the voice teacher first - never take “pot luck”! There are some terrible teachers at big well known schools and conservatories and some great teachers at smaller/less well known schools. Do not assume that because a school has a great reputation that all of the teachers are good.

There is a recent thread about a VP student looking to change studios because of a bad fit with voice teacher.

Andrews University
College of Wooster
Illinois Wesleyan University
Mansfield University
Millikin University
Nazareth College of Rochester
Nyack College
Oklahoma City University
Samford University
Shenandoah University
Susquehanna University
University of Puget Sound
University of Redlands
Valparaiso University
Wartburg College
Wayne State University
Wheaton College (Illinois)

When DD was a freshman at Rice one of her masters level studio mates won the Met National Council competition. She did her undergraduate at Webster.

Oberlin would be a great smaller school. Its an exclusively undergrad program and it has the intensity and rankings of a big voice school such as IU.
