Looking for a school near (but not in) an urban center in midwest or east coast, selective acceptance criteria, possessing a strong psych program, gender studies minor. Anticipate grad school later. Student is immigrant from Kazakhstan, transgender, with 4.3 GPA. Likes Northwestern. What else is out there?

Not in midwest or east coast-- but I believe Emory in Atlanta, Georgia has a strong gender studies program and psych program, a good amount of graduates continue on to graduate school, and I’ve heard the campus is very LGBT friendly.

If you’re willing to expand the location criteria, look at the Claremont Consortium in California.

Clark is great for psychology and good for LGB but I don’t know the situation for T students.

As a note, many colleges will happily allow a student who identifies as a particular gender to live with the person of the same gender. I believe Emory does this for its trans students.

I would check out the Campus Pride Index, it might be a place to start at least. Almost all schools will have a psych program, and then you can check some of the schools that you like for a gender studies program. Another good way to see if the school is transgender friendly is to try to contact students at schools you are interested and see if using prefered gender pronouns and gender neutral bathrooms are common things around campus.

Curious if a small college, far from a city, can offer our trans son an environment that will help him with his transition.

I think Brandeis fits all your criteria
