Look at St. Louis University. You would be a good candidate for the Presidential Scholarship which is full tuition for 4 years. I think that they offer 25 to 30 of them. The campus has an active campus ministry with lots of student involvement. The St. Louis Jesuits came from there. You would definitely get some good merit aid from them.

Gigi, your stats and accomplishments will get you into just about any school in the midwest. The question is, what kind of setting do you want. Coming from a small religious high school I think the first thing you should think about is how far out of that comfort zone you want to be. Do you want the diversity of a big public university? Will you be uncomfortable or challenged in a positive way by a very secular liberal arts college? Do you need the religious setting you are familiar with? I completely understand the importance of the financial aspect, but the fit is the key, and with your accomplishments you should be able to receive substantial aid at any kind of school you want. Good luck.

gd016- 2170 isn't good enough for Northwestern?!?!? The average SAT on a math/reading is exactly 1400. The OP has a 1410 (better than average).

Id say

you are a great candidate for Notre Dame

along with

Michigan
Northwestern
Uchicago

ncody: actually, I believe once the class of 2011's stats are calculated, the average will be closer to 1500.

*that's for accepted students, not enrolled.

Look at Colorado College in Colorado Springs.

With your interests in music and math, St. Olaf is an excellent option for you. On the music side, there are amazing choirs and even the possibility of concentrating in Church Music. But the rest of the subjects, including math, are quite strong. I believe St. Olaf has one of the highest number of math majors in the country. You should qualify for good aid. http://www.stolaf.edu/ Northfield, MN is also the location of Carleton College, so there is a good amount to do plus you are not that far from the Twin Cities.

You could aim higher, that's all I'll say!

More on math and St. Olaf: Of B.A. institutions, it is #1 in the country in the number of students who earn PhDs in mathematics. Another sign of excellence: 8 graduates this year won Fulbrights.

Music: "St. Olaf College is home to seven choirs, two bands, and two full orchestras — including the internationally acclaimed St. Olaf Band, St. Olaf Choir, and St. Olaf Orchestra. .. Additional performing opportunities include more than a dozen early music, jazz, and chamber ensembles."

It's also one of those Colleges That Change Lives. http://www.ctcl.com/colleges/st_olaf/index.htm

rence, what do you mean by I could aim higher? Higher than University of Chicago or higher than a smaller, lesser-known school?

Also, I have another question for anybody...will it kill my chances at places (by places I mean any of the suggestions or the places I'm applying to, especially Univeristy of Chicago) if I get a B+ in a class? Right now I'm borderline A- in my IB Biology class, and I take my final on Thursday. My teacher's finals (plus all of her tests) are notorious for being EXTREMELY difficult. In fact, she tells us her tests are designed so that nobody gets higher than a 90 percent. I got an 89 percent on my midterm, and I don't know if it will be possible to escape with an A-. I may end up with the first B (well, B+) of my life. Is that going to kill my chances? AAAAHHHHHH, my mother is going to freakin' kill me! (just a personal aside)

No, one B+ will not ruin you, at least with admissions. Your mother might be a different story. Good luck with that.

wow... people like you make me amazed that i somehow attend a top school

ps: you're fine

Thanks for the encouragement...I've just been kind of freaking out lately...it's actually more my mom than getting the dreaded B+ itself...I have a friend who easily got into University of Chicago this past year with 6 Bs up to her final semester, and she almost got a C in math (I'm not sure what she actually pulled off)...I think IB probably helps, though...plus, this girl got WAY more scholarships than anyone else in the entire class, including the valedictorian, who only got one or two.

Having just come through my S's senior year in HS, I suggest that YOU need to enjoy your senior year and not freak out since you seem to have what it takes to get in many wonderful schools you've listed.

I can only hope for your Mom that she can chill since I know from personal experience IT WILL ALL WORK OUT FINE and if the parent is bouncing off the wall it does not help the parent-child relationship in a year where it is best that everyone be on the same page and the same team.

Good luck and take a look at Colorado College.

Thanks, everybody...I think I've started narrowing down my list....I know I want to apply to about 8-10 schools, and here are the ones I know for sure I will apply to:

University of Chicago (my personal favorite--I love that school SO much)

Knox College (mom went there--she REALLY wants me to go, plus she has a really good friend, Corine Anderson--mentioned on a Knox-related post, who is working EXTREMELY hard to recruit me--she even let me do ACT prep in her office while my mom was at the school visiting)

Loyola University Chicago (I'm not sure yet if I want to go into music, but if I do, I have a really great friend/choir director who is leaving the parish I have been participating in the music program at for nine years to go and work there, so--it's higher on my list)

Lawrence University (my mom recently decided it's a great match for me)

Dominican University (mom's making me apply there even though I'll probably get a full ride--a LARGE percentage of students at my high school go there because it's within walking distance, and I think you get an automatic scholarship just from going to my high school--plus, I know of people who got 19s on their ACTs and got scholarships)

Notre Dame (grandpa went there--with Regis Philbin (just a random fact), great-aunt+two of her kids went there, so extended family pretty much really wants me to go there)

Okay, so that's six. My dad also really wants me to apply to one of the Ivies (which one I can't decide--any suggestions?) just because he says I'll never know unless I try. I still want to apply to a few more so that I can keep my options open. I would like to stay within about 4 hours of Chicago. Can anybody suggest what other 2-4 schools I should apply to?

Thanks :-)

Oh, just an update for all those who encouraged me...I just got back from my biology final and I pulled off an A- in the class (A on the final)!!!!! I think I'm one of the first in a while...The other day a classmate asked the teacher if it's possible to get an A on her finals, and she said that it's happened before, but she doesn't remember who the last person to pull it off was...Well, I guess I kind of made history then. Hooray!!!!! And another good thing is that the only other girl in my class who could possibly have had straight As all three years so far ended up with a B (plus her dad's a biology professor)!!!!! Sorry if it sounds like I'm bragging, I truly don't mean to, but I'm pretty ecstatic right now!!!!!! :-)

Congratulations on the good final score! Great that you did so well! :)
