My son's college counselor suggested we look at this school due to his possible interest in video game development or even early elementary teaching. He really is unsure what he wants to do, but has never liked school, and may appreciate a more "hands on" environment. Everything I've read about Columbia College seems to address their arts programs (theater, music, etc). Does anyone have any opinions on their other programs ie. liberal arts and/or media and communications?

Thanks

Have you tried posting this question in that school’s forum, available under Colleges to the left?

I’ve heard it has a good film program.

I don’t think they have their own forum, unless I’ve looked in the wrong place.

Here you go!

Eh, not too active all the time, but can be helpful, especially the sticky threads. Also, I’m sure alumni and parents will be happy to pounce on new questions; the old ones are kind of getting dusty.

Columbia College Chicago was on Happykid’s (Theatre Tech/Design major) short list. She loved the campus location smack on the lake front in Chicago, the Tech/Design program there was excellent, and the pre-professional and career contacts were fantastic. However, the financial aid at Columbia College Chicago is just about non-existent, so Happykid ended up at a different place. The admissions staff was very straightforward about the money issue, and during the orientation session told the potential applicants to consider taking as many of their gen eds as possible at community colleges and/or other affordable institutions during the summers. Columbia College Chicago is very transfer friendly, so if your kid opts to do the gen eds at a local CC and then transfer, it won’t be any problem.

Thanks, randomazn14, but that’s Columbia University, not Columbia College. Totally different ballpark.

Happymom…thank-you for your input. We’ll be visiting other schools in the Chicago area, so I guess it doesn’t hurt to spend some time there. I just haven’t been able to find any opinions or views on the less performance-type majors.

Check out Champlain College in Vt for video game development.
