Looking for info on Rollins College

For S, 18, who is doing a gap year as an Americorps volunteer, visited it recently. S wants a college with diversity, small classes, community service orientation, and caring professors. He is not into sports, and isn't into partying.

S visited it on a Sunday, so wasn't able to get a comprehensive idea of what the campus is like.

S is African American, and comfortable with people of all races and ethnicities. Has high scores, grades under his potential, but likes school. Has broad interests ranging from psychology to art to the hard sciences.

Small, selective school in Orlando area that's very expensive.

Actually, you may want to consider FSU - Honors. Very caring professors, extremely wide areas of study, very community oriented in terms of contributing to the community. Small classes, tough academics. My older daughter is in her senior year in honors and has had many opportunities to contribute to community welfare - they actually record the hours on your transcript. Lots of programs for volunteering and leadership. Undergraduate research opportunities are outstanding.

Not nearly as expensive as Rollins.

Honors: http://honors.fsu.edu/
UG Research: http://www.research.fsu.edu/facultystaff/students.html
Med: http://med.fsu.edu/biomed/undergraduate/

Expensive: Yes, I know that part. S would not go there without significant merit aid.

What I want to know, however, is how big the partying culture is; how good is the education; how extensive are the community service opportunities (CS is S's favorite activity).

If we're talking about Rollins, my knowledge is superficial. If we're talking about FSU, then I can provide some insight.

A place to start is here: http://www.fsu.edu/~service/students/commserv.htm Note, however, this is apart from the many opportunities presented by the organizations associated with Florida State, such as religious organizations. My daughter has helped with many efforts including hurricane recovery assistance.

Thanks for the link, parent2noles.
Now, if someone could also give info about Rollins as well as Stetson, a college that some people on another board are recommending more highly than Rollins.

This is one organization she's found interesting... http://www.fsuimo.org/

More sunning than studying at Rollins... Don't know a thing about Stetson.

Interesting - I used to work right across the strett from Rollins. It is in Winter Park, FL, a suburb in the NE Orlando metro area. Lots of opportunities for community service opportunities around there. Don't know much more than that about it. Orlando was a fun place - except for traffic. My mother attended Stetson for one year in the 60s. It is a small liberal arts school in a much smaller area (DeLand).

If your son is primarily interested in community service, I'd look closely at Rollins. I don't know too much about the area around Stetson/DeLand, but there are a number of things that he could do near Rollins.

Are you familiar with Berea College? - http://www.berea.edu/ It is far from Florida, but sounds like the type of place that your son would like to visit.

Berea certainly has its good points and the fact that public intellectual bell hooks now teaches there is a major good point. Unfortunately, we make too much income for Berea to accept S.
