Hi,

I am senior at a non-target US university with a GPA of 3.9, majoring in Econ and Mathematics. I have an internship in Europe at a Ministry of Finance, but it's nothing big of a deal. I also have good extracurricular activities - competitions, president of a club, also have good research papers. However, I don't have a good internship in the finance industry. I am probably going to do a Master's degree Finance in Europe this fall( LSE, Cambridge or ESADE) but I want to do a good internship this summer. I believe all the good IBs have closed their application processes. Where can I look for internships(financial industry), either in the US or Europe for the summer. The thing is that the career services at my school is awful, and there are almost no alumni that can help me.

Thanks

Given the fact that your school is a complete non-target and that you have little to no alumni representation, your best bet will be to hit the pavement and start cold calling / cold emailing. With a double major in Econ/Math and a strong GPA, the lack of a school pedigree can be at least partially overlooked/gotten past provided you can highlight your leadership achievements and really sell your internship (even if it isn’t too impressive, sell it as if it were impressive - punch up the resume language and such). Additionally, many shops have not yet closed their summer internship recruiting efforts and beyond that there are numerous boutiques and small advisory shops that might be able to use a person of your intellect provided you show some drive and reach out to them.

You should first make sure that your resume is top notch and clearly highlights all of your accomplishments and highlights them very well. Next, go to the BB bank web sites and submit applications to SA opps. Then go to MM shops and more prominent boutiques and do the same. Finally, look to Craigslist, Efinancialcareers, Google, etc and find smaller boutiques and advisory shops to email and/or call in search of internship opportunities. Be confident and persistent - it’s getting late in the game and you’ve got a tall order, but you’ve definitely got some potential and need to make sure you sell your candidacy very well and leave no stone unturned. Good luck and PM me with any further questions.
