Looking for liberal arts college for HS junior - straight A student; strong athlete; strong performer

She was thinking liberal arts because she wants a smaller school…we live in MA…think she will stay close to home…my husband and I went to Hamilton…and loved it…they have great academics and softball…strong dance but don’t have musical theatre

Probably would Bill…I’m quickly learning there are many ways she could go about following her Dream…thank you!

Here is a list: Member Institutions

My D did a lot of musical theater in high school but did not want to major in it and wanted the academic environment of a liberal arts college. She’s an English major at Vassar and has been happy (well pre Covid) with the theater and performance opportunities for non majors. Good luck!

Guilford College in NC has a forensics program, a softball team, and is a CTCL.

@MMcgraw27, Since you’re in MA, you’ve probably considered Williams. It ticks the boxes for superb math & sciences, soft ball, and small but vibrant music and theater departments with ample performance opportunities for non-majors. Williams doesn’t have minors, though double majoring is common.

Musical Theater per se is a bit more complicated, but I think that the combination of Williams vocal music offerings, the multiple theater performances staged each year (including musicals), the summer seminars and internships and the imfluence of the Williamstown Theater Festival would make it worth exploring.

Steven Sondheim is an alum.

For musical theatre in a liberal arts setting, look into Muhlenberg.

Seconding Muhlenberg. Vassar and Wesleyan if you think her stats make them reachable reaches.
For math+music, the reference is St.Olaf, but you’d need to email the music dept. to hear about MT productions.
Forensics majors have limited options at the BS level - it’s best to major in chemistry or biochemistry (with a forensics minority if she really wants).
Criminal Justice tends to be a sorta vocational major that future LEOs take before joining the force.
Criminology is a legit field, you can look at the description on the UMaryland dept website.

Thank you!

Yes…Williams is a possibility…really appreciate your advice!

I want to note that Criminal Justice is also a legit field and there are plenty of people in undergraduate and graduate CJ programs that have aspirations other than law enforcement. Some schools will cater more to future law enforcement while others will be a mixed bag.

It’s true that if you’re looking at LAC’s, you aren’t going to find as many “Criminal justice” departments, but you will often find the same material being taught in a criminology or sociology or law and justice program.
