Looking for non-conceptual based Art School

Hello, I'm a junior in highschool right now, and I've decided that I want to pursue and hone my art in an art school.

I feel that this will be worth the cost of tuition, however, I am deathly scared of going into a school where conceptual art is praised over technical.

Example:
I've looked at SAIC recently, and was feeling pretty good about it.
Then I saw this video.
YouTube - "At the Table" School of the Art Institute of Chicago 2007
The way the woman, assuming a professor, says get out, the ridiculous praise from everyone else, just completely turned me off of that school, if I'm spending money it's going to be to learn and be pushed technically. Not to be awarded for ********.

In general, I want an art school that will push and challenge me as an artist, and not put me through this crap. I'm perfectly fine with having a message behind a painting, but in the style of Michel Angelo or Thomas Cole. None of that trash.

Also, I don't mind working hard daily, in fact, thats what I wish for. I'm paying for an experience nobody that hires me will care about, I'm doing this for my own ability, not to get by and waste money.

Can anyone point me in the right direction of art school that would have the greatest focus on technicals? The art schools themselves don't seem to advertise it.

SAIC is sort of known and loved for that.
you should look into schools that names got “academy” in it.
PAFA for one. or go to ateliers that figurative master would be teaching.
I am afraid you can not totally avoid ***** if you choose any of so-called top artschools here these days.
I don’t know figure is your thing but here it explains bit why and where.

What are you interested in studying? D considered RIT. They have one of the few Medical Illustration programs and in the NPD review stressed their preference for observational vs conceptual drawings. D was not interested in that, because she wants to be able to express herself through her art vs become a technician - i.e. an artist.

Have you considered design programs? Maybe another parent or student can comment on the curriculum based on their experience.

Cross off SAIC completely and set your heart on PAFA.

Look up Laguna College, in CA. Look at some of the faculty artwork. And also Lyme Academy. I don’t know a lot about either, but that’s a starting point.
I can’t think of any others.

But actually, technical what? Observation, medium?

Seriously, why do you even want to go to art school if you dont want to study conceptual work? Go to engineering school or just go to community college if you want to only study technical stuff, but its not going to get you anywhere.

hey hey easy! butchering is half OK only after you get to know the^kid better.
wouldn’t you wonder what made today’s teenager want to learn about hudson river school master? he didn’t have pokemon cards or Xbox or what? ( I think it’s “he”?)
let the kid speak, shall we?

You know what. After looking things up that I should have previously, I think I’ve found that I’ve used alot of words that I don’t know what they mean.

Let me rephrase myself entirely, using nice pictures so I don’t have to rely on words I’m not sure of.

I want to pay and go to art school to learn to paint this,
http://www.deshow.net/d/file/cartoon/2008-10/world-famous-paintings-2-28.jpg

not to paint like this
http://origin.arstechnica.com/journals/law.media/349/349/lewittcubes.jpg

Thats all I really meant to say, sorry for misusing strange words.

so you didn’t have any pokemon card?
you did ask right questions, no worry.
how about these?
please rate by (A love B like C so-so ok D shouldn’t called art)

^ can’t wait to see what you have to say after the ratings! An original test given by B and D, could be interesting!

GSH!!
show us YOUR ratings, while we wait? wagwagwag
you mean did you see my this photo kid’s “where to go?” test or “your whiteness” test?
I had few more, I can’t remember…

I am also waiting for my rice to cook and coffee brew.

I think I would have to categorize the ratings into something like-

  1. art I would like to be doing
  2. art that leaves me in awe of the artists talent/vision
  3. art that I would want hanging in my house
And, but of course I have seen (and taken- though not online) your other tests - why do you think I love you so!
Got to get ready to babysit and then go to friends voice recital - will check back later.
Happy Spring to all - just got my '63 Valiant out of the neighbor’s garage, readying it to go back on the road since the salt and sand of the winter is gone, we are done with winter, aren’t we?

nope
maybe elsewhere but not in Boston.
I did babysat, too and remember bundling up girls in puffy winter jacket over pretty dress going egg hunting.

@OP just a heads up… the painting you dont want to be painting, you’ll be doing that pretty much your entire foundation year everywhere you go.
i suggest doing a precollege or taking a few really good art classes to get more exposure to what learning in a high level art world is like, it will really push you and open up your mind to a lot of things.

Here’s another:

[Schuler School of Fine Arts | Baltimore, Maryland](http://www.schulerschool.com/index.php)

“training students in the methods and techniques of the Old Masters” – but unaccredited and no dorms or anything like that. They have an exhibition coming up in early June.

I’m not really impressed by anything there except for 2. I mean, I know theres artsy crap behind them, but anything from B down I know I could recreate myself. And some I feel are just insulting, like 9, 7, and 3.

1) C.
2) A.
3) D.
4) B.
5) C.
6) C.
7) D.
8) C.
9) D.
10) B.

Also I’m impressed by almost everything piece of art at the website Greenwitch linked.

hey kid
you might want to tell people here what your background is before anyone is going to post something mean, short version will do. (and I wanna know!! do tell!!!)
like, where you are born, where you now live, when you started art in where, who taught you, what else you do at HS, your family/parents’ take on things:arts, education, society etc.
and if you had any pokemon card?

I am rather awed by your guts. I might have to agree with the butcher, maybe you won’t want/need so-called art schools in US.

OP - Great that you are already checking out schools and thinking about the kind of program you do/don’t want. You’ll see a good deal of advice on posts about finding your “fit” and as I re-read your posts, it seems that you are trying to figure out what that means for you.

When we started our search about 18 months ago, D’s ideas about the school she wanted were not too informed and have narrowed and changed as we visited schools and researched curriculum, campus, job placement, etc. D does not envision herself as a studio artist. There were several schools (SAIC among them) which gave her the impression that their focus is to prepare you for independent studio work. But that alone did not rule out this or other schools. So, you pose a good and valid question. I hope you get plenty of feedback. That way you can use it as one data point along with the other factors important to you in selecting the place where you want to spend 4 (or 5) years of your life.

One more note - D is not a big fan of modernistic art. She is not even interested in visiting the local modern art museum. At this point in her life/training, it does not inspire her. And she understands that she may need to do this kind of work as part of her training just as the liberal arts major may need to take a math requirement - it makes us more rounded and poses different questions to develop critical thinking. Thanks for attaching a visual aid. It explains things better.

Well, not sure how that would stop someone from posting something mean but all right.

Apocalypse Me: Jaws of Life

I’ve lived in Michigan my entire life, my dad drew portraits in his free time in stipple pointillism. He taught me a lot in my elementary years, from then on in middle school I basically only drew at school, same for my 9th grade year and sophomore year, although I did take art classes every year.
Recently (junior year) I’ve bought a drawing board and portfolio and I’ve been drawing a large graphite drawing every week, then painting at school which I spend 3 hours in classes every other day.
As far as non-art, I’m a second generation mexican, although I do not speak fluent spanish, however, my parents do. Also, I have played classical guitar since my freshman year, and, for a while, I thought that was what I wanted to do.
And yes, I had pokemon cards. I also have an xbox. They were/are great fun. Smiley-face.

@ bears and dogs, I liked that list. I am one of those people that think expressing yourself creatively makes it art, so none are D. But 5 and 6 are definitely my favorites.

OP kid
I know it is a wrong thing to say at the moment but I want to meet and talk to your dad.
All right if you thought pikacyu squirtle snorlax were fun, I don’t worry.
go forth!
try PAFA, it is accredited and respected, and in Philly, you should be able to find the kind of guitar strings you need when you need it.

do free summer pre-college here, It helps you win college money.
You just missed deadline but try anyway, put a letter explaining your situation (did not know about it til today, really want to learn more (well, do you want to?) get in your app together NOW, this moment, send it overnight, OK?
and your works better be top notch.
