On the side note, I will be taking a college course at a university in the spring of 2014. One of the eight students chosen from my school to be a apart of the program.

I am looking for an undergrad with a good pre-med that is right for me. I live in California. Yes, I'm looking at UC's but what else?

Yes I am. It is super scored. And I’ve been getting the same scores.

I believe my family is middle class. I don’t like the atmosphere. Good question, obviously a test doesn’t measure my intelligence if I manage to achieve straight A’s.

On the side note, does being 1st generation and 100% Hispanic help?

Run the net price calculators on the various universities to see what their financial aid will be like for you. Saying that your family is “middle class” says very little about your financial aid situation, since it seems that almost everyone says that (even people in the top 2-3% income bracket that would not get any financial aid from any college).

Is 1510 the two part (CR+M) or three part (CR+M+W) SAT score? Have you signed up for the ACT as well?

Calif publics don’t superscore.

Your school may have grade inflation if your grades are that high, yet your scores are modest.

What atmosphere do you dislike at Riverside? How much time have you actually spent on campus?

You need to run the NPC’s on the UC and CSU websites. If your family is middle class, but can’t pay much, you’re going to have trouble paying for college. Your FA pkgs will ALREADY have full loans in them…so you won’t be able to borrow more. Besides, premed students shouldn’t borrow much ANYWAY.

Your parents would have to qualify and cosign add’l loans. BAD idea and they probably wouldn’t agree to it anyway. Most parents won’t do that.

Be sure to also apply to the CSU and UC that you can commute to.

Well, pre-med with biology major is my plan but I will most likely take an intro to engineering or computer science to see if I like that as well. Furthermore, yes it’s 1510 all three sections. I live in San Diego so I’m fairly close to the majority of the UC’s.

Juniata has great premed. They give merit aid.

Do you by any chance have a learning disability? Like others, I am confused by the SAT/GPA contrast and wonder about grade inflation. Your grades make the CSUs safeties.

Riverside gets a bad rap but it’s a very good school.

You might want to look into test-optional schools that give good merit aid.

I’m sorry if I came across as insulting, OP. I asked the question because many bright students have great difficulty taking tests. Sometimes the difficulties with tests are because of a learning disability.

You seem to equate a learning disability with stupidity. This is far from the case. There are people with learning disabilities who have very high IQs.

SAT scores are a measure of academic performance. Your scores are not a match for your very high grades. In asking my question, I assumed that it is your test scores which are not an accurate reflection of your learning. One possible reason for this may be learning disabilities.

Have you never wondered why your scores aren’t higher?

Sorry for the outburst. Well, yes I do wonder. I always thought if it was because English was my second language and Spanish was my first. However, I only spoke Spanish until 4 when I learned English. Now I am fluent in both. That could be why I have a low CR and Writing score.

I live in San Diego so I’m fairly close to the majority of the UC’s.

?
That is an odd statement. You live at the bottom of Calif, therefore most of the UC’s are NOT fairly close to you. You live near UCSD. UCI, UCR, & UCLA are 2-3 hours away. The rest are even further.

Anyway…Unless you get your test scores up significantly, you really should not be blowing off UCR or Merced. Your best hopes right now, academically and financially, are UCR and Merced. UCR now has a med school, and Merced is new and very “private-school-like” because it’s small and personal.

What “atmosphere” do you dislike at UCR?

There are CSU’s that will accept you, but CSU’s don’t give as much aid as UC’s, so that’s why you really do need to include UCR and UCM. If you only apply to higher tier UC’s and get rejected by all of them, then a CSU or CC may be your only choices.

Keep in mind, your testing issues will make it difficult for you to score well on the MCAT. There is a correlation between ACT scores and MCAT scores. You need to uncover and correct whatever it is that is hindering your testing abilities, otherwise you’ll end up with a MCAT score that med schools won’t accept.
