Hi! Rising senior looking for help with college selection process. As per the title, I absolutely fell in love w/ NEU but am really lost with expanding my college list. Any advice is appreciated!
Some info:
3.8 UW, 4.5 W GPA (6 APs so far)
SAT 1550
no class rank, but estimated top 20%
Upper middle class, but don’t want to spend too much on undergrad tuition
ECs: 2 leadership positions, tennis, internship, ton of volunteering, tutoring
interested in environmental science or engineering but prob applying undecided
I rly liked NEU and am looking for:
defined campus preferably in city
location in northeast or maybe a little to the west (I’m from NY)
Co-op or internships, good job opportunities
not too large but not too small
planning on applying to NEU, URochester, CWRU, UPitt, Binghamton, Tufts as of now!
My stats aren’t the best, but feel free to inquire abt any other info. I’m curious about if my stats would grant any merit aid at places like UPitt or Binghamton? Do I even have a shot at these schools? Open to all suggestions :]
Drexel (mentioned above) immediately came to mind. Urban campus (in Philadelphia) with a strong co-op program. Somewhat less competitive in terms of admissions.
Be careful about applying undecided if you are considering engineering - it.can be hard to transfer into an engineering program at some colleges.
So many schools in engineering support co-op. My son is at Bama…they support them. On his summer internship, a teammate was a co-op at Ole Miss. So I think you can find them anywhere.
Drexel and Pitt come to mind as others have said but Kentucky is urban, UTK is urban, U of SC, etc. - all urban.
You don’t want to spend much - apply to Alabama and Arizona with those stats. And expand your reach to save $$$. Many Southern schools are loaded with Northeastern kids.
But since he’s looking for Iran there’s more than Cincy and Drexel. A lot more. Kentucky. Pitt. UMd. Umm. Probably most colleges find the ones you like and Google.
I would suggest Rochester Institute of Technology and George Washington University. A friend’s son is very happy at RIT and did an internship at Tesla in CA. GW offered my son a lot of merit aid (I think $26k if I remember right) so the actual price for these schools may not be the sticker price. I am very familiar with Northeastern’s fantastic co-op program as an alum and parent of a sophomore, but I will say I have recently gone on many college tours with my other child and many colleges tout their student internships.
One good thing about Northeastern though is you don’t pay tuition when you’re on co-op and you earn money, which will probably offset your housing expenses. My son got a Dean’s Scholarship (merit aid) so that helps too.
I believe the OP is looking for back ups should NEU not work out - hence the list of schools you’ve seen that are urban - Pitt, Cincy (a bit), Drexel, UMN, U Kentucky, GW, etc.
