Looking for schools with strong foreign language programs

Hi

I am looking for suggestions for schools with strong foreign language programs, my daughter is currently a senior is HS. She has heard of Middlebury, but that school is not in our price range, and she doesn't think she has a chance of getting in. We live in Wyoming, and UW is her safety school, but she would prefer to go out of state. There were some family issues last year that affected her, and her GPA and SAT/ACT test scores took a huge hit. We are looking for schools that have strong foreign language programs, and where she has a chance to receive some merit aid. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

She did NOT study at all last year for her SAT/ACT tests, so her scores aren't the best. She's been studying and will be retaking them in Oct & Nov. SAT was an 1840 (660R, 550M, 630W) ACT was a 28 (31 English, 23 Math, 33 Reading).

Her current unweighted GPA dropped to a 3.3, but her classes have always been Honors, and IB. She is currently in IB English, IB Math Studies, IB History 2, IB Biology 2, IB Spanish 5, IB Russian 3, French 1, and Chorale. She is confident she will do well in all her classes this semester.

Her school doesn't offer much in the way of EC's if you aren't into sports, but the ones she does have, she's been doing since freshman year.

Thanks,
Wymommy

Will your daughter require substantial merit aid to attend a university since you said that Middlebury is out of your price range? (Middlebury typically gives great financial aid to those who qualify)

Also, don’t worry about the EC thing. Wyoming is enough of a hook.

Sorry to be vague! Her only requirement is that they offer Russian, since she is in her third year, and wants to continue so she can become fluent. She doesn’t necessarily need to major in it, since she is still trying to determine what her major will be. She eventually wants to work for the government in some capacity. She will need substantial merit aid to attend.

Thanks!

Thanks Warblersrule, I will look at those links.

Or you could just look at Wisconsin which has 70-80 languages and centers.

[The University of Wisconsin-Madison Language Institute](http://www.languageinstitute.wisc.edu/)

I definitely second BrynMawr - language flagships are the best programs (only a handful of them and Bryn Mawr is a superb school not only for Russian but for other languages) they’re much more intensive (…and intense ) than other programs, all students in the flagship language program are good and motivated and they’re heavily recruited. Your daughter should apply and being from WY will give her an edge  although her grades and test scores should go up during the Fall of her Senior year just to be sure.

I mentioned Bryn Mawr to my daughter, and she was a bit concerned about an all girls school. She has always been a bit of a loner, and isn’t into clickish, catty girls. She had heard Bryn Mawr can be like that. Is there any truth to that? The LCTL database was extremely helpful. Some schools she was considering, that said they had Russian, did not offer it on a higher level. They were quickly crossed off the list. A counselor suggested she look at IU Bloomington, saying they had a good language program. Is anyone familiar with that school?

Connecticut College is a possibility I think. My daughter has a friend who attends there for languages and she loves it. She lives in the Language Dorm and all the kids speak different languages to each other although they are all English speaking by birth.
