Looking for small LACs

Hi! I was hoping you guys could help me find some medium/small LACs on the east coast & mid Atlantic.

I go to a high ranked public school in PA, where my UW GPA is 3.68. My SAT score is 1410, CR 780 and M 630. I’m fairly confident in my ECs, essays, and letters of recommendation.

Right now my top choice is Dickinson, but I would really appreciate other suggestions. I’m not looking for huge reaches- I’m mostly looking for good schools where I would have at least a 50/50 shot. Hopefully the school offers decent aid as well.

Not sure about major yet, but I’m interested in Political Science, International Relations, or Communications.

Thanks for the help!

I was going to suggest Dickinson. are you female? My D (who attended Dickinson) also really liked Mount Holyoke and Haverford.

@intparent thanks for the suggestions! I’ll add them to my list  Would you maybe be able to tell me about your D’s experience there?

She loved it. She did really well academically (graduated Phi Beta Kappa). Found her classes interesting and her profs accessible; she is a couple years out now, and still meets up with some of her professors sometimes in DC. She spent junior year off campus – one semester abroad and one interning for the Dept of State. Made lots of friends she is still in touch with (last night she had dinner with two friends she met in her freshman dorm). She got a very good job after graduation through a Dickinson grad a couple years ahead of her; she is still with that company, and has been promoted a couple of times.

Run the Net Price Calculator on each school’s web site and talk to your parents about what they can afford.

My D liked Dickinson very much. I think Dickinson is a good fit for your area of interest. My D is now at Lafayette College (and loves it). Other ideas might be Franklin & Marshall, Skidmore, Trinity, Muhlenberg, Connecticut College, Union College and Fairfield…

Definitely check out Lafayette and Franklin and Marshall, which have a lot in common with Dickinson. You also might like Union and Connecticut College.

Plenty of great Match and High Match recommendations already.

Why not take a flyer on a few more reaches? Someone mentioned Haverford already; Haverford would be a reach or a low reach with a 3.68 and ~2100 SAT.

I’ll list it just so it isn’t lost in the text:

Haverford
Wesleyan
Hamilton
Vassar
Colby
Bates

…are all excellent, reaches or low reaches for you – not super high reaches/out of reach – and in New England or the Mid-Atlantic.

And don’t forget to apply to at least one true safety! For you that’s probably your state flagship or a less selective state school or private school.

Apply in the EA round at Dickinson if you aren’t going to apply ED. Visit if you can, they definitely care if you show interest.

U Richmond has more diverse offerings in the social sciences than most LACs.

As a safety, Susquehanna. Other options – Rhodes, Bucknell, Wheaton, Allegheny, Knox, Hobart & William Smith.

You can’t do better than Syracuse for those interests if you decide to add at least one large college to your list.

@intparent Thanks so much for all the help! I visited in July & did a group interview, which went pretty well. I have an alumna interview next week, hopefully that will be good  Everyone I’ve spoken to has had such positive experiences, and it was great to learn yours. Thank you

@happy1 Thank you for the suggestions! I’ll start researching them now

@prezbucky Thanks- I really appreciate your suggestions & advice. As far as safetys go, I have a pretty good one that’s definitely doable academically & financially. Not necessarily ideal, but it wouldn’t be the worst outcome. Anyways, thanks for the list!

@warblersrule I appreciate you recommending Syracuse- it’s definitely peaked my interest & I kow a few people who have loved it. Thanks for the suggestions!

I agree Dickinson is a great choice. For a safety you might want to look at St. Lawrence. Hamilton and Haverford are good ideas for reaches.

If you are willing to look outside the East Coast, take a look at Denison (safety), Kenyon and Macalester (matches) and Carleton and Grinnell (achievable reaches).

You would probably have a decent shot for merit aid as College of Wooster. They have an integrated Independent Study senior project that looks pretty interesting.

American University in D.C. is a very good school in a beautiful location with great access to the federal government and national resources. It has excellent political science / international relations programs and often offers generous financial aid and merit scholarships.

One of the best kept secrets for students interested in a Communications major is the Park School of Communications at Ithaca College. They have a scholarship program that awards 10 incoming freshman FULL SCHOLARSHIPS (tuition, room / board / books / computer stipend). Here is info on the major: http://www.ithaca.edu/rhp/ Here is more info on the scholarship: http://www.ithaca.edu/parkscholars/award/

I’d think you’d be in a good position to receive merit money from Washington College in MD; also perhaps look into Alleghany in PA

might look at Holy Cross and Lafayette.
