Looking For Some Course Decision Help

Hi Everyone!!

I am a doing American online school, but I am Canadian and live in Canada, majoring in Computer Science (could be video game design or business if I get accepted to certain schools). If you guys could give me some feedback on my Grade 12 courses, that would be greatly appreciated! I want to make sure that I’m not missing anything that would help my application! I have a 4.0 GPA currently.

I’m going to be applying to a lot of schools in the states, including Harvard and Stanford (hail marry!), Vanderbilt and University of Washington (strong reach), SDSU and USC (probable), and UC Boulder and Chapman. I am also applying to a few Canadian schools, but I don’t believe I have to spend much time on my application (??) so I’m not too worried.

G9: This was a pass or fail school and this is what is on my transcript after switching.
PE Credit
Social Studies Credit
English Credit
Math Credit

AP Computer Science (Java)

I am debating a few things here. First, I made my grade 12 courses based on what I want to take and what would really benefit me. Stats and Economics will benefit me greatly as I am really interested in investing and sports betting (using computer algorithms in the future, hopefully!). I honestly hate history and would only take it if it was necessary. I was told that American universities require American history, but not if you’re Canadian. I chose AP Stats over AP Calc because I didn’t think Calc was too necessary for me. Lastly, there is Sign Langauge. I have a deaf Aunt so I would much prefer to take these two classes over finishing French-- that and I hate my French class!

Please let me know your thoughts! I really appreciate it:)

P.S.
Does anyone know what schools do NOT accept online (science) courses? I know the UC schools do not, but I’m not sure about any else. My counselor said that they haven’t had any issues from the University of Californias.

Am I allowed to reply to this?

I need to finalize my courses this week so I’d appreciate any help! Sorry if I can not do this (remove it if you need:) )

For CS, I would say calculus is a must. Right now, those are the most competitive majors. Were any of your science courses AP?

Schools like Harvard expect 4 years of the SAME foreign language.

There are schools that have issues with lab sciences being taken online. You will need to check with the schools on your list.

@momofsenior1 Thanks!

Dang, I really want to take AP Stats. Do you think there is a course I can substitute for AP Stats? It’s really pertinent to my ECs/future.

Mmm. That foreign language is going to be tough, but I think I would prefer the sign language regardless. Thanks for letting me know though. No science courses were AP, I don’t like science and I have no need for them, so I’d rather spend that time on my ECs.

I’ll send an email to all these schools asking about science courses, thank you! Hopefully, most are fine with it.

Either take Stats over the summer and Precalculus Honors during the year, or take Precalculus during the summer and AP Stats along with AP Calculus (or Calculus Honors). You’ll already be at a severe disadvantage due to having reached level 2 in a foreign language instead of 4/AP.
(Since you’re Canadian, haven’t you taken French for 5 years already? In that case, take the French subject test to validate level reached and take ASL as a “bonus” foreign language).
Do you know your parent’s budget? (You’re not eligible for aid for SDSU, UC’s, UWash so would be full pay, respectively 40K, 65K, and 55k a year).

@MYOS1634 My apologies for the super late reply. I figured this post was dead so I haven’t checked in a while.

I took some French during elementary but it was pretty basic stuff that I don’t really remember. I think I will just roll the dices with the language. I am taking 5 units of Math, many electives, and more extracurriculars during the time, so I think it makes it (very slightly) better.

As for the Stats, I think I have decided against taking it. My schedule will be heavy as is and a lot of the schools recommend AP Calc for computer science majors.

I found I can’t apply to SDSU nor UC because of their science lab policies. I am slightly confused, I didn’t think I was able to recieve financial aid for any America schools, but it seems like only those three schools won’t provide it? Regardless, I have talked a lot with my parents and, although it will definitely be a factor, I can still go to these schools without financial aid.

What do you (and anyone else) think about AP Government over AP Microeconomics? I was told by my counselor that she recommends it, but I am really interested in economics and I will likely be majoring in something CS/Economics/Statistics related. People on this forum and the schools I’ve looked at haven’t mentioned anything about Government, so I don’t think it’s that important??

Thank you!
