We're searching online, but I thought some of the people here might have encountered this type of show. Any recommendations?

Backstory: My kid and various friends are somewhat disappointed that their senior year musical is going to be "Grease." They are "legit" singers and would like an opportunity to show off a bit, so they're thinking of doing a very short musical or operetta for the student-directed One Acts, if they can find a good one.

I don't need links to publishers, just specific "We did such-and-such and the crowd went wild" kind of suggestions! Thanks

Well, if you can’t find something, they can always do a cabaret type show. That is what our seniors did a few years ago for their senior project. Each kid did a portion of a song that had meaning to them about their futures, or memories of their years in high school. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house!

They could do excerpts from a Gilbert and Sullivan show or a Herbert/Romberg/Harbach Operetta. I believe that they are in the public domain. They usually induces gales of laughter in modern audiences if they are done “over the top.” They also serve as great vehicles if you want to show off big-time legit voices. “Naughty Marietta,” “Desert Song” or “Rose Marie” are fun ones to do, even if you just except them: “Ah, sweet mystery of life at last I’ve found you…” “Tramp, tramp, tramp along the highway…”

Also, researching these shows can provide some great background for those who want to pursue a career in this field.

On the modern side, here are some trendy (song cycle) musicals in one act with some challenging numbers: Elegies, Myths and Hymns, Edges, Songs for a New World.

And, of course, there is [title of show] but what many people may consider foul language is pretty pervasive.
