Looking for that full ride!

My stats are:
2010 SAT (700 cr, 700 math, 610 writing)
My GPA is around 3.7 unweighted and 4.4 weighted.
My rank is top 10 (maybe 7 now?) out of 380.

How does this look for a full ride to a public in-state college? (VCU in particular if anyone is familiar with that)
Thank you!

There aren’t very many full rides out there without being a NMF. A full ride includes tuition, room, board, and books.

With your M+CR, there are some schools that would give you free tuition, but I don’t know about free rides unless you really go to a lowish tier school.

As for VCU…

It doesn’t look like they have any assured scholarships for stats nor “full ride” scholarships.

* Selection of scholars is made on the basis of merit in the area of academic achievement. Leadership, community service and artistic talent (when applicable) also may be considered.

Merit-based scholarships range from $500 to $9,200 and are awarded only during the fall semester.*

How much will your parents pay?

Alot of the scholarships at VCU come from the departments, so it’d help if you could let us know your planned major. 3 friends of mine all have scholarships at VCU. One is business student that got a 4-year scholarship for about $4,000 a year, an an engineering student (with stats pretty similar to yours) who receives about $2,000 a year, and an art student (also similar stats) who received about $1,500 or so.

I’m pretty uncertain about VCU’s full rides…or any in VA for that matter. Most of what I’ve heard of and found out are full tuition only.

Do you have a low EFC? VCU has offered some small school grants in the past, and there is also a grant you can recieve if you’re a VA resident.

I was looking at this link, and under presidential scholarship it says,

“Presidential
In-state tuition, fees, room and board.”

Further down it says,

“Presidential scholarships
High school GPA Average for freshmen awarded Presidential scholarships 4.50
Middle 50 percent of freshmen awarded Presidential scholarships 4.33-4.68”

and average SAT scores are 1400-1530 with 1460 being the median

I am at the low end, but it isn’t out of reach, and I’m looking at engineering. Also wondering if anyone knew how many presidential scholarships they give out?

Oh and what is an NMF?

National Merit Finalist.

and average SAT scores are 1400-1530 with 1460 being the median

Yes, you’re at the low end, but the likelihood of getting one is very rare with a 1400. Also, your GPA is a problem. Average GPA is a 4.5…the mid-range is 4.33-4.68.

Anyway…what is your situation? How much will your parents pay for college? If you need merit scholarships to pay for college, then it’s NOT a good idea to put much hope in one that you won’t likely get.

If you need merit scholarships, you need to apply to schools that will give you ASSURED merit scholarships for your stats. That way you’ll know for SURE that you have that money.

Haha well aren’t we optimistic? I have applied to schools that are affordable, and my parents will support me as much as they can I’m thinking. Our situation is just fine, but I’m still pushing for this full ride; I was just seeking more information on mainly this scholarship in particular, trying to keep loans at a minimum. And if not the presidential, they offer a provost scholarship - full tuition and fees, which I qualify for, leaving $8.5k (I’ll say $9k next year) per year. That still isn’t bad, right? Thank you everyone for the help!

:)

Trying to be REALISTIC. I wasn’t sure if you needed merit money. If you NEEDED merit money, then relying of getting VCU’s full ride is not a good idea. I’m not saying that you have no chance, but when your SAT is at the bottom of consideration and your GPA is less than their mid-range, your chances are diminished. However, maybe you have amazing leadership experiences that will push you to the top. :)

Anyway…my point was that IF YOU NEED (or strongly desire) large merit scholarships, then you NEED to apply to some schools that will DEFINITELY give them to you for your stats. Does that make sense?

Resurrecting this thread - I received the Provost scholarship* which is full tuition and general fees. I feel blessed and congratulations to others who have scholarships!

Congratulations and thanks for letting folks know how it turned out for you!!

Congratulations and thanks for letting us know. I am so happy for you. Are you at VCU? It’s always so nice to get these followups.

Yay! Hope you have a great experience there!
