Looking for Transfer Schools-Help?

I'm looking to transfer from my current school to another school on the East Coast. I am a freshman at Marist College with a current GPA of 3.94. My high school GPA was a 3.56 and I scored around a 1850 in my SATs. I also need a school that has good transfer financial aid/scholarships, that definitely a big factor in my decision. I am an undecided major, but I want to at least minor in Spanish, maybe major in History/English Lit. But I definitely want a school with a extremely strong Liberal Arts program. I looked at schools like American and Tulane...
Any suggestions?

It would help to know more about why Marist, a good school where you are doing well, is not meeting your needs.

Marist is a great school, I am just looking for something a little more academically challenging. Also Poughkeepsie is very close to home and I’m looking for something a little farther away.

Also, at the end of Spring 2010, I will have 46 credits already. I want to make sure most of these credits transfer over.

Do you know what your EFC is for FA? What is your home state? I don’t think there are many schools that offer scholarships to transfer students.

My EFC was pretty high, I don’t recall exact numbers. My home state is NY. But, I was hoping to get a merit scholarship due to my GPA

^^^

Unfortunately, big merit scholarships are usually for incoming freshmen, not for transfer students.

Do you have a scholarship at Marist? If so, how much?

How much are your parents willing to spend each year on your education?

I have a $8,000 merit scholarship and have taken out $4,000 in a student loans. My parents would be willing to pay the same amount we are now, around $30,000-$32,000.

Well, since decent merit scholarships for transfer students are hard to find/get, and the few that are available are generally quite small, it’s probably better to target schools that simply fit your budget. :)

There are schools that fit the $30-32k that your parents are currently paying.

You want something more academically challenging…and further away than Poughkeepsie…

What is your intended career?

Law school in your future?

how far away do you want to go?

Do you want a bigger school? same size?

Quiet campus?

Rah rah big sports to watch?

Greeks system as an option?

Honors college?

warm weather?

cold/snowy weather?

Well, the reason I mentioned Tulane and American is because they both have good transfer scholarship opportunities (Tulane gives up to $10,000 and American gives up to $16,000)

As for your questions:
What is your intended career?
I don’t have a career in mind- but I have considered education, publishing, law, and speech and language pathology

Law school in your future?
Not for sure, but I would like a school that if I did decide to go that route, it would have the resources

how far away do you want to go?
I want to stay on the East Coast. So far the only two on my list are Tulane and American…I’m looking for something farther north (PA, MA, NY, CT)

Do you want a bigger school? same size?
Between 3,000-7,000, marist is about 4,200

Quiet campus?
I don’t want it loud all the time, but not too quiet either

Rah rah big sports to watch?
doesn’t matter

Greeks system as an option?
doesn’t matter

Honors college?
ideally, yes, but it isn’t necessary

warm weather?
doesnt matter

cold/snowy weather?
doesnt matter

At Tulane I’m only seeing a merit scholarship for PTK members, are there other ones for transfers that I’m missing?

[Tulane Admission: Scholarships & Aid](http://admission.tulane.edu/aid/index.php)

^^^

Unless Tulane has other transfer scholarships, I think you have to be a graduate from a community college to get the $10k PTK scholarship.

That said, the Cost of Attendance at Tulane is $53k for the current year - likely will rise for Fall 2010 (as all schools likely will) to about $55k. (You need to expect that each year will increase in all areas - tuition, room, meals, etc)

A $10k (if available to you) scholarship reduces the cost to $45k. That is more than the $30-32k your parents are paying. Even a full Stafford loan would leave you short.

The good news is that there are schools that fit your budget of about $35k.

Now…as to your answers to the questions… :)

You want a smallish school - 3k-7k students… You’re not particular about anything else. Are you set on a smallish school? If the school is larger, but has an Honors College that will give you a “small college feel,” is that ok?

Can you do any college visits anytime soon (like in the next month or two)?

I’m set on a school that does have a smallish feel and if it has an honors college that gives it a smaller feel, that is fine as well

i can do college visits in the next month or two.

thank you so much for your help!

You said you wanted east coast. Tulane is not east coast, FYI.

Marist is a good college, but I would look into Fordham University. The school is an academic powerhouse and the academics are superb. I transferred into Fordham from NYU and not only has it saved me money but it has offered me a better education. Worth checking out, just my two cents.

Fordham is indeed a fine school. Academic powerhouse might be a bit of an overstatement given all the school’s out there that are at the highest levels (Ivies, Chicago, Stanford, Duke, and on and on), but Fordham is quite good and certainly one can get a superior education there.

@kellbelle - BTW, I didn’t mean to dissuade you from Tulane, I just wanted to point out that you said you wanted east coast and then said Tulane. It seemed inconsistent.
