Looking input from folks whose kids completed or are currently enrolled in Computer Science

Daughter wants to graduate in CS. We are trying to build a list of college including safeties. I am looking for colleges where your kids are happy pursuing CS. If school has liberal arts that is a plus. Daughter’ most important requirement is that the college have enough computer science courses beyond introductory courses. No 8 to 10 course list only. The college have enough faculty who can teach and have good industry experience. Current student/professional are welcome to give their opinions aslo. Thank you.

One of my nieces graduated last year from the University of Minnesota (Twin Cities) with a computer science degree. She had several job options upon graduating and chose to work at a large corporation that provides customer relationship management cloud-based applications. I think she was very happy with her undergrad education.

Friend’s daughter just graduated from Case Western with her CS degree and is working her dream job at Amazon’s game studio. Lehigh has a solid program with the liberal arts piece as well. I will also put in a plug for Purdue’s program and RPI but both are STEM heavy and not so much liberal arts focused.

@momofsenior1 Case western is good thanks. but I heard Lehigh is great university in other subjects, it is not that good only 8 to 10 courses in computer science. RPI is definitely yes.

@rosered55 OOS Public school are no good for us as we can not afford OOS Public school price tag.

I understand. Minnesota was affordable for my niece and her family because of tuition reciprocity with Wisconsin.

@rosered55 We do not want to apply for the sake of getting in, financial affordability is a biggest consideration.

Yep, got it.

Does your daughter understand that her top requirement and your top requirement are not the same?

She is fully aware about it.

Do you know how much you can afford to pay and whether that lines up with schools’ NPCs? I know of a few schools at which students had good experiences in computer science, but both schools give only need-based aid (other than small National Merit Finalist scholarships).

yes we have told her and her school counselor, Her prep school counselor told us she is least worried about her. But I am doing my work in getting some good school.

OP - If you are chasing merit money, talk to your high school guidance/college counselor to see if they would nominate your daughter for the RPI medal scholarship. My daughter received it and it was a sizable award.

How about Clarkson as a safety? Also very generous with merit $. Great career outcomes there.

We visited Clarkson, she did not like it much.

Oh well! That’s why visits are important

WPI. Lots of happy kids there(including mine) and lots of CS courses and projects.

Yes WPI is already on the list.

What do you have on your list so far and what has gotten crossed off?

Second WPI, my brother who does hiring for his company suggested it as a safety for my son as he has been very happy with its graduates. My son’s other safety was RPI. My kids was serious about CS, so he didn’t actually care about what the non-STEM offerings were. He attended Carnegie Mellon (can’t say enough good things about it.) Fantastic alumni network, just the nerdy atmosphere he was looking for - kids who play board, tabletop and video games and read a lot of sci-fi and fantasy.

Harvey Mudd advertises itself as a liberal arts school, while still being a math and science oriented school. My kid got waitlisted there, and in retrospect it wasn’t really what he was looking for. I think you have to be from NY to be eligible for the RPI medal. Someone else in my son’s class got the nomination, but my son did get a reasonably sizable merit scholarship. (And an even higher offer from WPI.)

So far 20 school and including safeties - STONY Brook and Buffalo (in state college), Match RPI, WPI, and other reach and super reach suspect schools.
