Looking to Change From Finance to CS (non-trad story)

Hi all,

So a bit about me first. I am a 2012 graduate that just got a degree in finance with a minor in economics. Toward the end of my college career, aka when it was too late, I started to realize that finance actually IS NOT the best career path for me and that I'd be happier in a comp sci, etc. type of role. Fast forward to today when I have not yet received a job, and I am now considering going back to school already and completing a second undergraduate degree in computer science.

Since I did not anticipate being in this position, I have no clue how I could ever make this transition and was wondering if somebody can help guide me on what all I would need to do to do this sort of thing. My goal is to work for a startup or an area where I can combine my business background with the development of new software for businesses, so I'm looking for some of the better programs that get recruited by top tech companies.

If anyone has any info about how I can apply to complete this second degree, I would really appreciate your help. In terms of the cost of the program, money isn't that big of an issue because (very luckily) my parents are willing to help pay. However, we're definitely not loaded, so the cheaper option that might still allow me to achieve this goal would be best.

Thanks!

You’d have to check for schools that accept students for second bachelor’s degrees. You may be able to cut costs by taking lower division courses at a community college and then transferring. Note that CS also requires the ability to think mathematically – did your finance and economics courses contain significant mathematics?

Did you take any CS classes in college? You might be able to go for a CS Masters.

Also, you don’t need a CS background to work at a tech company like, say, Google. They need businesspeople too! They hire just as many as they hire engineers. Same applies for even a small startup. Someone needs to handle raising money and talking to investors and market strategy and marketing and public relations and product launches and financials, etc…
