Looking to get a BFA in New York

I just graduated high school and I an going to St Francis but plan on transferring after the first semester to go to a school with a very good BFA program. I don't have any experience in acting so I'd prefer to go to a school where you don't have to audition, il have no chance of
getting in that way

Most universities that offer a really good BFA program require an audition. There are a few not so great schools that are different though. You might want to check out some of the SUNY schools though. All except for Purchase should be fairly easy to get into and have a decent BA program.

Just to specify…** SUNY Purchase has a BFA program that is extremely difficult to get into.

I thought Purchase has two Drama programs, a conservatory thing that’s very hard and a normal drama program that’s easy to get into

The BA is extremely to get into because it is just a declared major. No audition necessary, but theres more technical theatre than acting

** extremely easy

Oh I thought that was a BFA class as well.

Pedobear, welcome to CC. I really think you should spend some time reading through the 12 part archived thread marked IMPORTANT at the top of the Theatre forum thread list. It will give you a much better idea of the different degree programs in acting and will help you decide which way you want to go.

You are asking for BFA programs but I think you are really looking for non audition BA programs. And since you will be transferring this will make it a bit easier. A BFA program is not only extremely competitive in admissions and even more so for a transfer, but it is really more for the person who already has some acting experience and KNOWS that this is the path he or she wants to take.

Here is my advice: I think it is great that you want to expand your horizons in college. You have no acting experience and so taking an acting class is a fine idea. But at this point you have no idea if you’ll even like it much less have talent in the subject and want to major in it. And slow down a little. You are looking to transfer before you even get to St. Francis.

Why don’t you try getting involved in theatre over the summer, maybe volunteer to usher locally or backstage so you can see what goes into a production. And get involved in theatre at St. Francis first to be sure that this is what you want. You may find out that you do enjoy acting and want to pursue it or you may be surprised to find out that you don’t like it at all. You may even end up loving St. Francis. Wait and see on that. BTW, a friend of my S’s will be attending St. Francis in the Fall and was recently on Broadway. Good luck! :)

Sandkmom has some really good advice. If you’re looking at getting involved with acting, you may not want to jump straight into the technical work behind productions without taking acting classes around the same time. Acting classes are MUCH different than actually acting in plays. And if you go straight into the ushering or back stage work before taking classes, you may think that you hate theatre before giving it a chance. Or on the other hand you may find that you love the production side.
I’m getting off track though. The main thing you want to do first is to take classes. Productions are great for a resume, but the classes are the real deal with understanding the differenct acting techniques and core work.
