Looking to go into FBI, which other major should I choose. And do you need to major in a language?

Please familiarize yourself with FBI requirements first before answering. If you don't already know, you must qualify through ACCOUNTING, LAW, FOREIGN LANGUAGE, COMPUTER SCIENCE, or diversified stuff but that's harder.
After qualifying, you're chosen by a list of critical skills. Everything is viewed here. > https://www.fbijobs.gov/111.asp

Basically for me, I was planning on qualifying through foreign language, as I (will) know Arabic and French fluently graduating high school. Arabic is also a critical language of the FBI so i can't extra points there. My only problem was how I should learn Arabic.

1.) Do I need to major in Arabic to become fluent in it? Or should I minor in it? I'm planning on spending some months in the middle east to become good at it but should I major in Arabic Language (which limits college choice) or minor in it to learn it at a "decent" level?

2.) I was thinking about double majoring. I know that can be hard, but it will be even easier if I minor in Arabic, so I can mainly focus on something else. I was looking at Accounting cause that's a "critical skill" but my problem with that is that if I don't get into the FBI I don't want to spend my life just primarily doing Accounting, and its not too well paid. Should I major in Economics? That's something I'm well considering and even if I don't get into the FBI economic majors are well paid.

3.) Or should I major in something else? The FBI likes Accounting or Finance (Finance, Business, or Economics) as "critical" After doing that, I hope to spend a few years working as a fraud investigator or White Collar Crime detective. Which should I choose?

4.) Finally, if I do major in Economics or something and then IF AND ONLY IF i also MINOR in Arabic, will I have time to minor in Film? Is it relatively easy to major and have two minors?

THANKS!

The website is quite clear. You should major in a subject for which you have a passion. Take the FBI out of the equation for the moment. What career would you cant to pursue? Is CS for up your alley or is finance?

You do not need to major in Arabic to become fluent in it. In fact I would probably dissuade you from an Arabic major. I would say, IMHO, that it will still be difficult to become proficient in Arabic after 4 years, even with some study abroad. While you may not want to major in Arabic, you do want to find a school that has 3-4+ years of MSA instruction as well as instruction in a local dialect or 2. e.g. Egyptian, Levantine,.

As for double majors, minors, etc., that is all moot until you are accepted into colleges. At that point you can compare the ease of combining programs; all schools are different.

Thank you @skieurope‌ Do you mean should l look at colleges that offer Economics and also have a minor and film and minor in Arabic. Now my only questions is this: I realize that most minors take one year to complete.I don’t mind that for film for example, but I want to spend my whole 6 yrs masters degree in economics studying Arabic. Can I extend the minor for more years or should I self study on my own time in those 6 yrs?

I would not recommend an Arabic undergrad major for the simple fact that many native speakers will fail the FBI Language assessment.

Government hiring is large list of “check the block”. The more critical skills you possess, the better off you are.

If I had to do it, I would major in BS Computer Science. I would also join the Army Reserve/National Guard to get the military experience. I would then knock out an MS Computer Science. You can always start with a technical degree such as engineering or CS and then go to something like an MBA (with a concentration in Accounting). The other way around is very rare and difficult.

Just to throw this out there, I know people in the FBI. You can’t make decisions on what to do based on wanting to get in, because most people do not. Even with “critical” degrees and ten years detective work in a police force, some are not accepted. Not to dissuade you from applying; just to give you a better picture. So you need to just study what you love doing even if you don’t get into the FBI. Because realistically, you won’t be accepted. What you need to do, then, is extend it. Don’t just look at the FBI, look at jobs in the State Department, Department of Defense, etc. These are all very competitive, and to really raise your chances you should join the military. That isn’t a requirement, but getting accepted one of these jobs is more of a crapshoot than, say, Harvard. So while you should apply, make sure your major is going to get you a job you won’t hate.
With that out of the way, you can’t just extend a minor for six years. Most, if not all Arabic minors include only 2 years of study. Speaking as someone who’s studied Arabic, two years of college Arabic is going to do basically nothing for you. Take all the classes you can in Arabic that’s offered, study on your own in addition, do immersion programs, and go overseas.

You seem to be going about this process backwards. You should figure out what you want to do, and then look at the places that do that type of work.

Instead, you have, for some reason, focused on the FBI, and trying to figure out what career track you should settle on to work at the FBI.
