Hello, I am look to major in something related to business. I wish to stay in SoCal but anything within California is good. I am considering Cal States, most of the UCs and some privates. The problem is that I have poor states.
GPA: 3.51 unweighted
UC GPA: 3.71
*note: I attend a highly competative and well ranked HS
ACT: 29, retaking
SAT: 1800, retaking
APUSH: 5 APLang: 4; Planning to take APLit, APUSGOV, APStats.
Planing to take SAT II US History and Lit
EC: Speech and Debate, Gov Team (national contender), Key Club Officer, Big Brother and various other volunteering organizations ( I volunteer a lot). I used to work as a translator for Chinese immigrants and, surprising, I tutored.
Cost is an issue, my families annual income is <15,000.
Please offer any advice or comments!
What colleges/ universities would you recommend?
Thank You!

For undergraduate business with your stats you have plenty of choices. Here are a few.

Cal Poly Pomona – Match, good program, new building, located in SoCal, hands on and expect internships.

Cal Poly SLO – Reach, apply anyway just in case you do get in. This school has one of the best business programs in the state, all hands on and a great place to be for 4 years. This school is unusual for California public schools as it has only about 11% Asians (some UC’s are up to 45% Asian). The school is looking to diversify and this could give you an edge. Look forward to lots of internships. My son goes here and is Asian – he loves it!

UCI – High Match, one of the only UC’s with a real undergrad business program, brand new, just established last year I believe.

Cal State Fullerton – Solid Match, great international business program and well respected in business.

Cal State Long Beach – Match, great business program, impacted big time, still try for it.

Cal State LA – Match, good for business. One of my former students went there and is now studying for his MBA at Pepperdine.

With your family’s income, you will qualify for grants and financial aid. If you are a first generation college student expect favorable consideration in admissions. With your family income look at private schools too. You could get a free ride due to needs based issues. Start learning about financial aid now.

Some privates to look at with good business programs and fit your stats are:

Loyal Marymount
Pepperdine

Thank you for your advice and help! I will for sure look into those school and financial aid. And yes, I am a first generation college student so I’m glad that will help me.
