Hello all. I’m currently a freshman at Cal Poly Pomona. I’m a communications major. My first semester GPA was a 3.92, and I expect it to go up after this semester. Recent information has led me to believe my chances of transferring to a UC are much higher if I attend a community college. Would it be wise for me to transfer to a CCC for my second year to get CCC status when applying for schools? My goal is to transfer to UCSD, UCLA, or UCSB. Thanks.
Yes. The UCs prioritize CCC students over everyone else. You can look at UC transfer rates for your major and get a feel for if you would be accepted based on GPA (but keep in mind they look at more than GPA when evaluating students). Also, check out assist.org if you haven’t already. You can see the classes you need to take by university/major. All that being said, I think Cal Poly Pomona is a great school. If I was there, I’d probably stay (but I’m sure you have your reasons for wanting to transfer).
Transferring from a CCC will exponentially increase your chances to transfer to a UC, especially with a solid GPA. I second @cloud7 and make sure you have a solid plan of deciding your major prep classes and G.E. path to transfer as a junior from a CCC before making the switch.
Determining you want to transfer from a 4-year solid school like Pomona is a big decision, and it’ll take careful planning to be able to make a seamless transition into a UC after a year at a CCC. However, that being said, there are people every year that successfully to a UC from a 4-year - you just have lower priority for admission.
