Looking to transfer! Need a lot of advice!

I am currently a freshman at the University of Denver and I do not like it at all. My reasons for wanting to transfer are lack of diversity, rich brats, school vibe, and the fact that I was not able to live on campus because of the high cost. I also believe that the I went to the school for all the wrong reasons in the first place: my best friend convinced me to go because she was going and I initially did not want to go.

I have always wanted to go to New York City for college. I am interested in colleges with a lot of diversity, descent dorms, well-known, good financial aid, friendly people, and good professors. I also want to major in psychology, international studies, sociology, or liberal arts.

I have a 3.01 gpa now and had a 3.8 gpa in HS and got a 20 on the ACT. EC: Volunteers in Partnership (V.I.P) and am employed at Health Center at my college.

My questions are as follows:
1.Is it wise for me to leave Denver and go to New York? Advice for when I get there?
2.School suggestions?
3.Helpful advice for people who have gone through the transfer process (ie what I need and what to look out for or avoid)

If you want to know more about my situation, ask. I need all the advice I can get.

Hey so its really odd finding this post… this sounds exactly like me. I’m a freshman at DU this year too. I told myself all throughout fall quarter that I’s spend this break applying to transfer to a school in New York because I feel like I did, after all, go to DU to be with my friend. I’ve also been really stressed out at Denver because of how expensive it is. I’m from the Northeast so I know a bit about the schools in NYC and I’ve been doing my fair share of investigating.

Unfortunately, I haven’t found much worth applying for. I talked to my friends at NYU and they said that it’s pretty difficult to transfer in and once you do, they treat you like another number. I do have to say that I feel pretty taken care of at Denver and it doesn’t seem like that’s the case at NYU. Also, their financial aid program is rather sub-par. I know Denver housing is expensive, but it’s also worth considering that no real estate in New York is affordable. At one point I would have considered looking into Columbia, but my first quarter of DU was less than impressive- I find the quarter system to be very rushed and overwhelming, another reason I wanted to transfer. Columbia’s sister school Barnard is however, easier to get into and a great school with private school benefits and good financial aid. That is, of course, if you’re a girl. The New School kind of struck me as more artsy liberal and wasn’t up my alley in that respect as a science major. It might be worth looking into for psych though. Then there’s Yeshiva University which is a Jewish school but they rank pretty well, I believe higher than Denver.

I didn’t really find any of these schools to be worth transferring to, but if you’re willing to live a bit farther out there are a ton of schools in the surrounding area that are worth considering… for me it was Fordham and Sarah Lawrence but I feel like those are also snobby schools. Even Hofstra or Rutgers are good choices within commuter’s distance to the city. I’m not sure if you’re on finaid but the reason I’m mentioning private schools is because they end up cheaper than the state schools in my case.

Anyway, good luck with the search. I know it’s a drag. Just hoping to get through Winter Quarter now!

It’s the financial aid that will be the problem. There’s little for transfers, and your stats unfortunately won’t get you into the schools that offer good aid.

Thanks for the help. It’s good to know that there is someone out there with my same problem. I have looked a lot into Barnard (I’m a girl) and it seems to be a good school and it has dorms which I’m really happy about lol. I have also looked at Rutgers. However, I am a little bit afraid of the size of Rutgers since DU is fairly small and I’ve gotten used to it. I looked at Fordham too and it did seem snobbish like you said and it didn’t provide a whole lot of sexual health resources since it’s Catholic. BTW I am on financial aid and have a couple small scholarships. If you find anymore info I would love to know.

Good luck with your search as well!!

I’m not going to comment on the remark about Fordham being snobbish, however as someone who attended for a year and a half I do feel the need to clear up the second part of your statement. Yes Fordham is a Jesuit University but there is nothing missing from their health services. I’m not sure what kind of “sexual health resources” you are looking for, but the University absolutely does force the religious beliefs of a small number of the professors on the lives of the students. Aside from the core curriculum, your student life will not be religious in any way unless you want it to be.
Barnard is also an extremely good school academically, and a 3.01 GPA would probably not be admissible to them. A 20 on the ACT will also hurt your app for all the schools mentioned since you are applying as a sophomore and it will be reviewed.
NYC is an extremely expensive place to live and I really wouldn’t recommend it to anyone in need of great financial aid. Food, transportation, housing, everything is generally overpriced.
You might want to look into the CUNY system if you really want to be in NYC. I believe they are less expensive and there are a number of campuses.
