Looking To Transfer, Need Serious Advice/Counseling (Computer Science/Engineering)

Good afternoon/evening/morning CC,

I am currently an active duty soldier starting school again this January. My contract expires at the end of 2016 and until then I am doing whatever it takes to stand out when I apply to UW.

I'm an immigrant (born in Latin America), grew up poor (22k combined household income, family of 4) and will be a "veteran" after my current contract expires.

My high school GPA is garbage, and my current college GPA is pretty garbage as well. (3.19, I failed college algebra and replaced it with an A)

I am a Red Cross volunteer, my weekends are spent at the hospital doing community service at the patient advocacy office. I run 5Ks for fun, play chess (I'm trying to join a club and become competitive again, went to supernationals when I was younh) and I am in the process of learning how to play guitar at a higher level.

I plan on being tutored on any subject I feel that I will get a grade of "B" or below and finish with a projected GPA of 3.62, I want to major in either electrical engineering, computer science or mechanical engineering so my electives will be used taking the prereqs for those courses. I'm posting here because I want to attend UW and would like to read your points of view.

Is it worth trying? I know these chance me threads must be repetitive and old, but of course I'd love to read some discussion regarding my specific situation. I apologize for the formatting. I'm sure you must have heard the ole' "Getting my act together finally" story. The military made me realize the need to take my studies seriously. I can't go back in time but I can move forward. Welp, that's it. Thanks for your time.

Yes, it is worth trying.
I applied with a 3.3 CUM GPA from an in-state CC college and was worried to death.
It was below the average transfer GPA of 3.49 and I had a few things on my transcript, which definitely went against me.
Aside from having a strong GPA, it is highly recommended that you finish your pre-requisites and spend some time forming a compelling essay.
If you can show UW that you are on the right path for your intended major through your course load and essay, then you will most likely get in with an OK GPA.
Although I did not have a strong CUM GPA, I finished all my pre-requisites with a 4.0 and wrote a fairly strong essay.

Hope to see you there one day!

*CC not CC college haha.
