Looking to transfer to a Music School...

Hey all,

I'm currently a freshman at a small, private liberal arts university in California. I came in undecided, always having a passion for music but thinking that I would never want to make music a career.

Ironically, I think I'm already coming to realize I want to do something in music, and seeing as how the music department at my current school is quite small and wouldn't be beneficial to my growth, I'm considering transferring to a true music college/university.

I've played guitar, bass, and trombone since sophomore year and have had experience in symphonic bands, jazz bands, and orchestras. However, I am purely self trained, which is why I'm worried about auditioning for certain schools. I have no doubt in my mind that attending a well known music school (such as Berklee) would vastly improve my skills, but I'm not sure if a school such as this would be the best choice. I took AP Music Theory in high school and got a 4, but that is as far as my theory experience goes.

Any suggestions would be great; keep in mind I am not sure exactly where I want to focus in the music world yet, but I do know I would like to keep in that realm of study.

Thanks,

Perhaps taking some private lessons in one or more of your instruments for the rest of the school year would be a good place to start (and continuing in the summer if you decide to go ahead). Also, taking a music class or 2 at your school and participating in some ensembles next semester might helpful. Since you are not sure of your direction, getting more experience and interacting with people in music could help you find a path.

You might want to look for other colleges with more music options available-- if you don’t want to start over, then probably a BA program. There are certainly a lot of colleges with great music scenes that are BA programs-- and since you don’t know what direction you want to go, that is most likely the best thing anyway.
