Looks like Preview = Snowstorm??!!

Watching the weather channel today, it looks like the new snowstorm in Denver will be targetting Williamstown on approximately Sunday/Monday. Oh boy.

Yup.... Hope it doesn't scare away the pre-frosh from warmer climates!

I live nearby and I certainly hope such warmer-weathered pre-frosh understand that the current weather patterns are far from the norm. Snow in the middle of April has, in my memory, never happened in the 18 years of my life here in the Berkshires.

It snowed in early May my freshman year (much more than 18 years ago!) And then it melted the next day.

http://oit.williams.edu/weather/100_history.cfm?which_data=snowfall

D has been adamant all along this college ride that she wants to get out of NC and go north....keeps swearing that she LOVES winter....yeah, right.

Ahhh. April in the Berkshires. Almost the start of the glorious mud season. A late April snowstorm in Williamstown once made me rent a UHaul and move to Atlanta.

I'm still chuckling at MickeyD's post here last week that Williamstown doesn't have severe winter weather. Maybe if you went to high school at a scientific outpost in Antartica.

Actually, where I grew up was quite a bit colder than Williamstown, mainly due to elevation. Bostonians like I-dad are wimps. It looks like the purple valley will see more rain than snow from the ensuing storm. Though some of the higher elevations (especially in the green mountains) could see well over 1 foot of snow.

And my name isn't Mickey!!!!!

Haha MikeyD. As I remember it, we all got a kick out of the freak May storm. I remember walking across the science quad in the snow in shorts that May day (I had already sent home all my winter clothes) and two days later we were all sitting out on Chapin beach. This spring has been the pits across the east; it's not a Williamstown thing.

Mikey, I had the same reaction as I-Dad: Do this qualify for SEVERE yet? :)

Actually I recently had this same conversation with a friend of my son's who is from the Western New York snowbelt. He's just happy that he's not the one who has to shovel.

Hey, it snowed the spring of my freshman year, too! Not to worry, though, Astrophysicsmom, it was the same year jrpar was referring to.

My D, who's lived her whole life in NC until this year, has made the adjustment to eastern Massachusetts weather. I try to check the weather up her way before I complain about it only being in the 60s here. I can't say she's really liked the weather this winter, but it hasn't been as bad as she'd worried it might be, and she REALLY liked the fall. Fall is even more beautiful in Williamstown. Also, when the weather only got up to single digits and the wind chill stayed below zero all day, her friends who stayed in NC were really impressed.

If you are going to Previews, the trick to the predicted snow and rain is layers. Throw a bunch of fleece stuff in your bag. If you aren't used to the cold, corduroys will be a lot warmer than jeans. Also bring a hat and gloves. Some sort of waterproof or water-resistant shoes or boots will help if the predicted rain/snow materializes. It helps to have a second pair of shoes (even sneakers) and some extra socks in case your shoes get wet. If you still think you might be cold, throw in a set of long underwear.

I came to Williams from the South many years ago. I learned and adjusted pretty quickly. You will, too.

Have a wonderful visit, even if the weather is unseasonably bleak.

"I came to Williams from the South many years ago."
Grace, what do you mean by this sentence?
Do you work for Williams? Do you live in Williams Town?

Three years ago, for preview day, we packed the winter coats, and hats, and boots.

The temperature was 88 degrees, and we went swimming in the North Hoosac on the way home.

I'm an alumna. Sadly, I only had the four years and didn't get to stay in the Purple Bubble.

That's the beauty of layers, eh? And a bathing suit would be great if they'll let the pre-frosh into the pool (which is an amazing facility). Too bad Previews doesn't cover a Thursday night as I think that's when the Outing Club has the Polar Bear swim in the river every week at 10 PM (giggles).

What do you think, rain or snow?

Both. It's been going back and forth, according to the weather reports. I hope you get snow. It's prettier and you guys could have an awesome snowball fight on the Frosh Quad or Morty's lawn.

Hey, if it snows, leave a big "'11" so they'll know we were there, okay?
