Loomis Chaffee Dress

Hey I was recently accepted to Loomis and I was wondering how they boys usually dress cause I would like to go shopping to get clothes
but I’m not sure what’s accepted and expected. I just would like to fit in and get insight to what other guys wear on campus. Perhaps what stores you guys shop at. Thank You

I’m a Loomis parent but we pay for the clothes and our son is very into his attire. Short answer - vineyard vines, brooks brothers, Patagonia, and LL Bean. Seriously. The boys wear salmon trousers with pride! You don’t have to dress that way but it is pretty common.

On a typical day, classic boat shoes, khakis, and a collared shirt are common (highly recommend the no-iron Brooks Brothers button down). Khaki shorts are okay, too. Collared shirt is required during the day. Some kids wear polo shirts.

In winter, either Bean boots or Timberlands. Collared shirt with a sweater over and a patagonia jacket.

For family style dinner you need a tie and jacket.

After class time, athletic attire is fine. You will end up getting a lot of Loomis T-shirts form your dorm, for sports teams, etc. so you don’t need a lot.

For sports, long Nike socks.

While the clothes are not cheap, I recommend having a relatively small wardrobe. Too many clothes just means a mess in the dorm room. We lived in a fancy town in Connecticut and found a lot of these brands at thrift stores. I got some great Patagonia from ebay as well. There is an LL Bean outlet store in Milford, CT where you can get almost everything needed for the school year.

how does the laundry service work at Loomis? is it often enough that you can have a smaller wardrobe? Are they ok with nice clothes? (Or do folks do their own laundry?)

There are some long long threads on this site about the great “laundry controversy” - whether to pay for laundry or not. There is a laundry service but it costs a LOT of extra money and they give you a pretty small bag for your stuff. My son does his own laundry - there is no stigma associated with it. He does laundry once a week and I’m sure re-wears clothes that are dirty. For dry cleaning he brings that stuff home at Christmas or for the summer.
