hey, I could use some guidance, and I know this is the perfect place to seek advice!

medium sized public high school in suburban Mass
rank: 4/~265
GPA: weighted 4.29... unweighted somewhere in the ballpark of 3.8-3.9ish (thus far nothing below solid "a" for a transcript grade)

ECs/awards:
girl state rep
viola since age 10
sophomore class president
youth group cultural advisor for temple (Jewish)
executive board student advisor (basically pity job for not being re-elected, lol) but it has some weight
MASSstar leadership representative from my high school
YMCA youth conference participant
History student of the year award
NHS (duh)
Tri-M musical honor society
HANDS (diversity organization) - presented media slideshow to school system about tolerance
french tutor
literary magazine editor (grade 9)
assistant teacher/tutor 5 days a week (~3 hours a day) at afterschool program
camp counselor for 5 years
award for outstanding contribution to the class of 2007 (10)

ok this is where I get nervous.
I am taking the real SAT May 6th
but I am consistently getting these scores on college board practice tests
CR: 740
W: 740
....M: 600-610. This upsets and scares me and I have no idea why because I am an adequate math student in school

so that's ~2090...1350ish, as I'm sure you're aware

as for schools (if I can't bring up that math score a little in the next week or so)

NYU
BU
Brandeis
GWU
Georgetown
Trinity
Middlebury

In my dreams?:
UChicago
Barnard

I intend on being either a pol sci or english major, and I think my scores/interests/grades/passions represent that. SOOOOO... WHAT. ARE. MY. CHANCES? (heh) and please be honest and if possible suggest some other schools I should consider.

barnard is definitely not out of reach- i would be more worried about goergetown and middlebury, which are verrrry difficult to get into. otherwise, i think you will be fine- besides the math score (which may very well go up when you take the test), you are a great applicant

Gtown and UChicago may be a little of a reach. But your UW GPA and extra curriculars seems fine. Plus your W & CR reading scores are great too. Although your weighted GPA seems a little discouraging, nothing below a solid 'A' yet only a 4.29?

Yeah, it's f'ed. that's because there is an honors scale and a college scale. My language classes (french), and some electives count in only at the 4.0 scale, whereas the honors scale goes up to 5.0

so essentially because of requirements, I can CURRENTLY max out at a 4.47, and that's if i got an A+ in everything.

It'll be higher if you remove gym and music (electives that went in as non honors courses) and unfortunately french won't count as an honors class until next year... so lame.

so if you removed gym and music it's more in the ball park of ~4.4 (which is what I assume colleges do when looking at my transcript?)

Yea they'll recalculate all that ish. I was horrified when I saw what my school put as my weighted gpa, but then the colleges told me they factor out most courses that arent considered "educational" and recalculate it anyway.

If you really feel that you're strong at math, go for the ACT. I'm pretty average at the SAT math, but I consistently get like 33's-34's on the ACT math portion. You don't have to review for it too because it's the same stuff you learn in High School.
