Hi,

One of my potential LORs is from a native spanish speaker who taught International Econ. She was good at Econ and could be a decent LOR, but her English wasn't great. Would it be okay to ask her? Will committees overlook any poor grammar, etc or should I find someone else?

Thanks.

My PI was a non-native English speaker. Of course not having an LOR from them was not even an option…but it did not seem to hurt me at all. I am sure your prof can write well enough if they have made it this far. You can usually distinguish non-native speaking poor grammar from poor grammar.

If she’s teaching in a decent university, she can write a decent letter, native English speaker or not. Period.
