I play piano, and while practicing I questioned myself and said, "Why am I doing this?". I never said this while practicing or to myself before. When I said that I never touched the piano all last week and this week. I have rehearsal on Monday and I haven't really progressed in my new songs. My dad really forces me into this piano thing because he used to play and he was a former conductor. My instructor is a good friend of mine, and giving me lessons for no charge, yes, no charge. She normally charges her students $100 a lesson. So I don't want to give her any crap. But my like for music is not there. I think the only thing keeping me going is the fact "I can play piano and my friends can't" type of motivation.

What should I do?

Maybe you should take a break? Just say that it’s summer and you need time (for something) and can’t practice as much as you’d like, and don’t want to waste either of your or your teacher’s time.

It’s good to take a break every now and then. If you force yourself to practice, you’ll just end up disliking it. Maybe pick up another instrument. I did that, and realized how much I like the piano.

Do you play any pieces you enjoy?

on the up-side your family didn’t invest money in the instructor, so there’s no issue of money going to waste when you quit. but i see how you might feel bad about it because the fact that it was free has made you feel like the expectations are for you to keep playing, etc…

well, there are many things people do that don’t have a nice answer to the question ’ why am i doing this?’. if you can replace piano with something else whose ‘why am I doing this?’ answer feels much better, then i say go for it.

when i quit piano i felt really guilty… i wouldn’t expect it to be easy for you to quit … it will be hard … but in the end for the better probably.

@aldig0 Yeah Jeanine Yeager pieces, but I have to follow a dumb book with songs I never heard of.

@enfieldacademy That’s exactly how I feel! I just don’t know what to do. I’ll think about it tonight. Thanks for response.
