Hi! I'm rethinking where I want to go, and UCBerkeley has come up. I disregarded it at first because it is losing money and staff members, and I thought that that would pose a huge detriment to my educational experience. On the other hand, I don't know to what extent that would be true.

If anyone could comment on this, that would great! Thank you so much!

The worry is drastically overblown. And frankly, a bit grating–in a cute, naive sort of way, of course.

I have heard of two instances where USC is trying to recruit faculty from the UC system (a mathematician from USCS, who they tried to hire earlier, and a social sciences prof from UC Berkeley.) What I don’t know is whether this is expected attrition or whether UC profs are making it known they are open to offers from other places. One thing to consider is how many Berkeley profs have a house, which they may not want to sell in this market.

@anonymous93, I remember you from other forums, how can you be contemplating CAL?? You have HYP at your fingertips!!! Wow!! I never thought anyone would give a UC a second thought after being accepted to the best schools in the nation!!

@Ektaylor - So I shouldn’t be worried?

@collegestress16 - Haha, I remember you too. For me, college isn’t about the prestige or which school is “the best.” I want to be happy with the college I choose, and I want to know that I made my college choice based on the right things. Sure, HYP are all great places, and I may end up at one of them, but Cal has great weather, a different sort of environment, diversity, amazing professors, school spirit, unpretentious people…

I suppose…but I meant “best” as in better financial aid, smaller class sizes, more resources, more emphasis on undergrad education, prettier campuses, higher rate of graduating in 4 years etc… Wow, now I’m turning you away from the very school I’ll be attending next year lol. Eventhough, it would be so utterly awesome to meet you in real life…I can’t tell you to come to CAL, just because it would be cool to know someone from CC in college. The opportunities at HYP are just amazing and it saddens me to push you away, but I truly believe you would be giving so much up.

You have some amazing choices. Cal is definitely one of them, but congratulations on – wow, Harvard and all the rest.

I haven’t seen any difference because of the budget issues, except a rise of student protests, which in my mind is not only a positive thing, but periodically a necessary thing. Keeps tradition alive!

You have to consider all the private schools with endowments and such that are losing the big bucks too, and raising their tuition to help cover costs and financial aid. Here’s an interesting link to something written by a Trojan.

25% loss to their endowment is a pretty big hit, if you ask me. And they’re losing staff too. So, it’s kind of across the board, both public and private. Maybe this will be the turn around year!

well just never do drugs, you’ll lose your money and mental faculty.
