Lost and hopeless...really worried...

Hi all
I'm currently a Bio Major at UC Irvine. I screwed my first year of college and now I feel like there is no hope for the future. For my first quarter in college I took Math2A, Bio 93, and Chem 1A. I got an F in Math 2A, a solid C in bio 93 and a C- in Chem 1A. I'm retaking Math2a right now hoping to get at least a B. for my winter quarter, I took Bio 94, Chem 1b, 1LB, poly sci, and asian american studies. I got solid C in bio 94&poly sci, B- in Chem 1B, 1LB, & asian american studies. Do I still have hope for grad school? I want to go into pharmacy but I feel like my grades and GPA as of this year have demolished my hope for anything bright in the future. I know I need to work harder and that is exactly what I'm doing. no more dicking around. should I retake chem1a?

I'd appreciate any kind of advice. thanks.

I would definitely recommend retaking the course. Graduate schools, especially, want to see that you were willing to fix your mistake and develop an upward trajectory as far as grades. Leaving a festering wound on your application will damage your chance of being admitted anywhere, or even being able to transfer to escape this bad transcript.

So the situation is you have ~2.0 GPA. Assuming you achieve the same this quarter… If you get a 4.0 sophomore year averaging the same amount of units, you’d have a 3.0 GPA. If you get a 4.0 your junior year averaging the same amount of units you’d have a 3.33 GPA (which is competitive for Pharm).

Realistically, your “chances” are low, considering you have about 17% chance of getting an A and 50% (17+33) chance of getting a B in each class.

Advice: take and perform well in more units than you are right now because it might be easier than getting 2 consecutive 4.0 years.

Please do not let that discourage you from getting into Pharm school. I was in the same situation as you are in, so I tried changed my habits this quarter and my grades so far have improved. Hang in there and work harder!

Aww, you remind me of myself… haha.

I am also a bio major (freshman) and I pretty much screwed up my first quarter. I am also retaking Math2A and I am so glad I retook this class. I took my entire fall quarter as a reality check that I really need to step it up and college isn’t a time to just play.

Let this year be the biggest motivation to push you forward to keep working hard. Don’t be discouraged & you should work hard to make sure you never see these yucky grades again… I commend you on acknowledging your mistakes and your strong will to keep perservering. So yes, you should try to retake classes because it can only help you in the end right? Just make sure you stay on track and not fall behind & now that you’re smarter than that, you will be a much better student.

If this is any consolation, my GPA isn’t so hot either and I want to go to grad school. After a long torturous year as a bio major, I am switching out to bigger and better things. BUT you should do what you want to do, even if you screw up sometimes, keep your eye on the prize.
