Thanks for all the info - we'll certainly look into them. He actually received a packet from Indiana U of Pennsylvania - the honors college there - after the PSAT results came out. We threw everything into a box, so we'll dig out the brochure.

Some other schools we talked about were (likely reaches) CMU, Vanderbilt, and Northwestern (we found lots of info in the posts here). S mentioned Ithaca (he has friends there and they like it) - since they have the communications school there and offer double majors. I just keep hearing that Ithaca is a "jock school". Don't know if the reputation is deserved or not ... Also, in keeping with his preference for warmth, Maryland.

Does anyone know anything about Elon - according to website, it has some pluses for tubaboy's preferences - music, journalism, several bands/ensembles to choose from, and warm weather. Also looks like he could may possibly qualify for some merit $$. Didn' t find much under the music threads on it, which may be a bad sign.

Thanks again for the help!

DD visited Elon (with us). She did not want to major in music but DID want to continue taking lessons and playing in an ensemble. She is an oboe/English horn player. When she inquired, she was told that only music majors are allowed to audition for and play in their ensembles. That scratched the school...well, that and the very isolated location.

Ithaca's Music School has an excellent reputation, but I'm unfamiliar with the tuba studio.D auditioned there and liked the facilities, but not the cold, somewhat isolated location.Nice ,sophisticated small college town,Cornell nearby. Her audition was in the middle of a raging snowstorm, causing travel nightmares for her and H,so her experience was colored by the stress.
Maryland's Music School has upgraded their facilities tremenously in the past few years.
S has a friend currently at Vanderbilt in the trumpet studio (freshman) with a nice scholarship, who is pleased with the school and his experience so far in Nashville.

Here are a few names and schools to check out. Some may have changed since I made this list over a year ago. These are just about Tubas; I have no idea about the other majors at the schools. These are in no particular order; I'm sure I left out a few as well.

Like they say - visit the school and have a lesson with the teacher.

Hope this helps you and your son!
