LOST! Intern in L.A SOON- Housing situation not going well PLZ HELP!!

OK, so I am a junior at my university studying retail Merchandising. I am from the south, east coast of the US and have applied and am 70% sure I have this particular position. I may pursue other options but for now I will base this question on the zip code of this one particular company.

The small company is in L.A area code 90014 on South Broadway street. I would be there at the end of June so I really need to find something now.

I wont have my car- does anyone know about the subway system? I know they have some type of metro and am planning on using that to get to work. Hopefully something gets to broadway street. I would like to find housing somewhat close to work, or atleast somewhere near a metro station. I also would like to be SAFE. I have NO idea where the safe or dangerous areas are.

Ive looked into some companies who let interns stay for 6 weeks min...which is the perfect length of time..except they basically want anywhere from 2-4 grand. WHAT? I cant do that.. The most I can pay is 800 for 6 weeks honestly..

Any help would be fantastic. I am so lost.

If you could also tell me what the safe areas around south broadway 90014 are called i can try and look with these names in my searches

That zip code is downtown Los Angeles, and you’re not going to get anything remotely close to downtown LA for essentially ~$600 a month. Housing costs in the LA Basin are crazy.

Check out Craigslist for possible short-term sublet opportunities, or a roommate type situation… but they’re still not going to come cheap.

How much are they paying you? If it’s not enough to have a decent place to live, tell them to shove it.

Well as of now I believe it is unpaid. It will be for college credit, so I will get some financial aid…but probably no more than 2000. I actually just started looking under craigslist…but the thing is is that i have NO idea if these areas are safe…or what districts and areas are next to what. I’ll be referencing any maps I find but human input would be much more helpful.

I think you are right about anything in downtown LA not coming cheap…so I think as long as I can catch a metro to downtown LA i should be ok?

I found some places in noho and burbank. Any thoughts on living there? Safety? TOO far? There’s something about silverlake too…is that in burbank? Same questions go for this area too.

Any outside areas people would suggest I look into? What areas would be too far? I’ve heard of venice beach…is that too far from downtown LA?

Venice Beach is going to be just as expensive, if not more. You’re talking about ritzy neighborhoods. North Hollywood and Burbank… you might be able to find a room, but definitely not an apartment. Avoid Compton, Inglewood, anything south-central. But with your budget, you may not have any options.

You should seriously reconsider taking an unpaid internship in one of the highest cost-of-living areas in the country. That’s ridiculously exploitative.

“I wont have my car- does anyone know about the subway system? I know they have some type of metro and am planning on using that to get to work.”

This is NOT viable plan. LA public transit is unsafe, dirty, notoriously late, and thin. If you have absolutely no time schedule or need to be in a certain place it would work. Other than that. NO.

“I also would like to be SAFE. I have NO idea where the safe or dangerous areas are.”

You can’t have safety and price. I actually have a friend who is also looking for housing in LA, she has an internship in Westwood. Consider getting a roommate, or a few!

“Ive looked into some companies who let interns stay for 6 weeks min…which is the perfect length of time…except they basically want anywhere from 2-4 grand. WHAT? I cant do that… The most I can pay is 800 for 6 weeks honestly…”

I don’t know where you’re from exactly, but California is always this much. Unless you want to stay in a crap area.

soo… how do people get around if traffic is always horrible and how do they live if everything is so expensive? I can’t believe that everyone who is non rich just live in the horrid areas?

This sucks =</p>

Check out the area around LA City College. Metro to downtown. Not as cool as Venice but cheaper.

Some would call us “rich” and we STILL moved away! And I have lived in DC and NYC. Act’s crazy.

Ok I’ll check out the LA college area.

Honestly, I don’t really care about what’s cool…I just want to be safe and have access to the safest public transportation that will get me to downtown.

So so far I’ll be checking out LA college area and someone mentioned possibly trying to room with someone in Hollywood? So I’ll be checking Hollywood area too.

On a map I see that echo park is above downtown area. Is echo park safe?

I know they say to stay out of south LA

See if you can sublet apartments from UCLA or USC students. USC would be especially beneficial since it’s close to downtown.

And nope, Echo Park isn’t really a good area.

LA driving is CRAZY - seriously. I drove there for the first time a couple of months ago. It was terrifying as EVERYONE has to drive and everyone is running late. They are either driving 80 mph or at a dead stop - sometimes within FEET.

It is such an expensive place to live that at a minimum, your internship (credit or not) should be providing you SOMETHING. A place to stay…

Public transportation is not like it is in east coast cities and you will not be able to get where you need to when you need to.

Honestly, I would rethink the whole thing. Sorry.

jesus…how bad is this public transportation?

I mean if I had to be in downtown at 11 am lets say…I dont expect to get at a stop or something at 10 15 am and get there…

Is it that bad where if I waited to get on whatever they offer at lets say 9 30 am i wouldn’t get to downtown at 11 am? I dont plan on staying anywhere farther than a 20 minute distance

Public transportation in LA is notoriously bad.
Are there any internship opportunities available closer to home?

Not for product development/product design experience that i need in apparel.

I mean its either la or ny. and both are going to be expensive except ny has better transportation probably…

Honestly…i dont even feel like the transportation here is that great. I always plan ahead. Leaving an hour and a half before my shift is really not a problem for me…i like being early to places anyhow. everyone says its bad and unreliable but I kind of want specifics otherwise I don’t know…I guess i’m not convinced its not do-able. call me ignorant.

I don’t know about downtown, but what blew my mind, moving to LA from New York, was that there were many places, maybe most, with NO access to public transportation. No bus, no train.

Agree with Shrinkrap. It’s not just a time issue, but some routes are just not possible.
We lived in downtown LA for six years and I walked to work at the courthouse. We needed cars to do anything past walking distance…it’s not safe to be on a bus in many of the surrounding areas.
Do you have a friend’s family that you could stay with in either NY or LA? I don’t see how this budget of nineteen dollars per night is going to work.

ok see THAT is a reasonable problem…time span to get to places…not so much for me.

I will definitely have to look into the routes then more and see…otherwise maybe I’ll hopefully find a roommate and pay them to drop me off/pick me up.

LA traffic is awful, but the transit isn’t good either.

You might want to ask this on city-data as well. Google it.
