Lost!! (soph)

Hey guys I'm only a sophomore, but I'm already thinking about college.

I go to a gifted school, which means I am basically a year ahead in all of my classes.

Freshman year I along with most of my classmates did poorly and ended up with about a 3.0 unweighted GPA (around 3.4 weighted), and this year I'm going to end up with around a 3.5 unweighted.

Basically I'm wondering if that freshman year GPA will really bring me down in college selection considering I'm usually more of a 3.5 student.
I got very close to national merit for my PSAT as a sophomore also, so I think I'll do pretty well on my SAT.

Next year I'm taking 2 APs, and hope that I can bring up my GPA even more.
Senior year I'll probably be taking 3 AP course also.

So Basically to make a long story short if i end up with around 3.3 cumulative unweighted GPA for HS, but have sports, clubs, a job, and probably around a 1400 SAT what are some schools you think I could get into?

DPC, you need to tell us WHAT you want to do (majors, what kind of school you want, etc). You do realize that the Ivies, for example, (aside from having smart student populations and large endowments) are about as different from one another as schools can get? There are tens of THOUSANDS of colleges in America; we can’t name them all for you. But you really don’t need to worry about specific schools until junior year - right now you should focus on getting good grades, doing well on your SAT and SAT IIs, and having decent extracurriculars. You can’t accurately know your chances until you’re a junior who knows where he/she stands on testing, ECs, and what colleges you can afford.

What specific classes did you take freshman year and sophomore year?

Alright I’ll try to give you a quick rundown.

Money is not really an issue for college, I would like to go to a university with around or under a 10,000 student body. Film is the major that most interests me, but I’d probably major Business in reality.

The Northeast and West interest me quite a bit (Maybe NYU, UCs, etc)
I tend to like colleges in a city with a campus feel.

And no I don’t know exactly what I want ,but I was just curious what tier schools you think I could get into.

Thanks Again

The UC schools don’t look at freshman year grades at all. :)

But anyway, as long as you do well on your SAT, you should be fine for college admissions. Since you go to a special school, colleges may be more lenient with GPA (and really, a 3.3 cumulative UW isn’t terrible anyway, as long as everything else on your record is strong).

Also: if you’re interested in film and business, definitely look at USC. It’s a powerhouse for both fields. Private, mid-sized university, lots of school spirit…you may like it.

Sophomore Year
French III
Algebra II Honors
Chem Honors
Art
Psychology
English II Honors

Freshman Year
Geometry Honors
French II
Biology Honors
Guitar
English I Honors
World History Honors

and Junior year I’m taking
AP Lang
Portfolio
AP Chem
Pre Calc Honors
World History Honors
Physics Honors

That looks like a fairly rigorous schedule…especially if it’s at a gifted school.

Did someone say, [USC Marshall » About](http://www.marshall.usc.edu/undergradprograms/degrees/bca/about.htm) ?

This program is getting competitive, though. Your SAT’s are probably getting there, but of course I have no clue about your chances.

Also, even though USC does look at freshmen grades, they do take into account improvement through junior year, difficulty of schedule, as well as what school you go to (as I would hope/think many other schools do)

Wow some great responses already

I think Columbia would maybe be a first choice, but that seems like a big reach.

Dpc, Syracuse and Boston University also have excellent film programs.

Yeah. Boston seems like an awesome college city.

anyone else?

Not exactly to your specs, but a good back-up could be Chapman University in Orange, CA. Kinda small, but they have put a LOT of money into the film school. They have a brand new studio/facility with state-of-the-art equipment. They also have a very good business school.
