Hello!
I just finished my freshman year at sdsu. First semester I got a 3.14 (I know not good) and second semester I also got a 3.14 because I got a D+ in a really tough business calculus class. Anyways, I was not a happy student I don’t really like SDSU and I don’t think that it is for me. I really want to transfer somewhere else. My dream would be The University of Michigan. Anyways, I really do not want to go back to SDSU for my sophomore year I would rather attend a community college in Michigan. But with that D+ in business calc I could retake it at sdsu and use a corse forgiveness policy where the class would still be on my transcript but just not calculated into my gpa. So I guess I am just looking for some advice on what to do. I really did not enjoy my time at sdsu but is it worth it for me to tough it out to increase my chances of acceptance at another university? Please any advice is appreciated I am so torn on what to do!
Thanks!!!
With a 3.14 GPA you will not likely be accepted at schools better than SDSU.
What do you not like about SDSU?
Are you a CA or MI resident? Going to a MI community college will not help you get admitted to University of Michigan.
As a resident of California (I’m presuming, based on SDSU enrollment) you’re going to pay Out-of-State tuition at Michogan, to the tune of $27,000. Compared to the $7,000 you’re paying in-state at SDSU.
A consideration.
More importantly: what was it you disliked about your experiences at SDSU? Are you sure a university is a good choice for you and your interests?
Retaking the class will just help your GPA at SDSU. But if you plan to major in business somewhere else, perhaps you might retake it. Agree that the 3.14 won’t get you in to UM, even with a CC stop along the way.
I didn’t like SDSU because I don’t believe that It will open the doors for me that I want opened. I didn’t find anything to get involved in that suited my interests. I am not a fan of the insane geek life/party scene. And UofMichigan isn’t the end all be all for me it is just if I lived in a perfect world I am open to other options. Currently I am a CA resident but my mom is moving back to Michigan so that is where the Michigan community college factor comes into play (not because it increases my chance at UofM or anything like that). But does being a in state resident help to improve chances of acceptance?
What are your SAT/ACT scores? I agree that transfer admission to Umich is a long shot with your GPA, but they do look at test scores from transfer applicants, so a high-percentile score relative to their freshman admissions pool could help your case. They also have a stated preference for transfers entering with junior standing as opposed to sophomore, so that is another potential mark against you.
What in particular don’t you like about SDSU? And what particularly appeals to you about UMich? What are you dreaming of that makes it your dream transfer school?
While SDSU may not open as many doors as UMichigan, you have closed a lot of doors by doing poorly your freshman year.
