lots of formal dances in college?

yeah - are there lots of prom-esque type dances in college?

all my friends that've gone off to college post new photos in facebook (hah, facebook) every month of so with fancy fall dances, winter semiformals, and whatnot. does this vary from college to college, or do most colleges have many formal events?

curious because i missed out on prom during HS (lots of complications haha) and i'd like to know if there were still events like it in college :)

It depends on the school. Some colleges have them for the whole student body, while at others they are mainly hosted by (and exclusive to) student groups like clubs, sports teams, greek organizations and ROTC.

Yes, there are formal dances! Sororities at my school generally have them once or twice a semester, while most clubs/organizations other than greeks have one once a year.

My college hasn't had a formal anything, let alone a dance. I know that sororities tend to do that sort of thing a lot.

Sororities and fraternities have one or two a year per house, and some clubs/organizations have a formal dance. There hasn't been a "university-wide" formal however. But then again we have 24000 undergrads, so I bet there are smaller schools out there that do have campus wide formals.

The Greeks are the ones that usually do that sort of thing. They have like spring formals and such, and then they have themed socials occasionally. There's never been one for the whole student body, but we're 23,000+ here, so...

At my school, dorms, frats and some clubs all have semiformals.

I go to a medium sized LAC and went to three formals this year. Each of the freshman dorms had one, the music organizations put on one, and then the schoolwide formal.

At my school it was mainly frats and sororities that do them but u can go even if you aren't in one you can still be invited.

Missing out on prom = a good thing.

Our college has some lame dances, I've read about all the "fun" they had the next week in our (lamer) school newspaper.

My advice, get a few of your closest friends together, pool your money, and do what you all want to do for the evening.

Not a lot, but we have like one a year or something for freshmen (not including greek/club formals/installs/etc). I hear it's not bad.
