also i got my satii scores back today
730 eng lit
770 us history
670 (ugh) french- didn’t realize it would be that hard. i took a practice test that seemed pretty easy and skimmmed through the book, but the actual thing was rele pretty difficult. i heard that satii language tests are very very hard unless you’re a native speaker-i was thinking of retaking.
also i’m taking the sats again on sat looking to get a 700 in math but we’ll see.

i don’t thnk the essays are posted yet but i was thinking about talking about how when doing public speaking you have to find the critical angle to have your message totally internally reflected into your audience. i know that sounds pretty weird and i would have to briefly explain the optical phenomenon i’m referring to. sound good?

i’m so happy all my tests are done for college! all i have to do is write application essays, get recommendations, do well in school, and practice springting to the mailbox to get my responses!

When you fill out your applications, please be careful to paste your essays into the box only once, to spell the name of the school correctly, and to not also include the name of another school.

I'll try to answer the questions that were about Brown.

Yes, the International Relations program is a very popular major, and a well-known program.

No, Comparative Literature is not a "practical" major unless you are going to be a literature professor or an English teacher or something. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't do it. The Comp Lit program here is supposed to be pretty good, and if that's what interests you, the degree from Brown can get you a lot of places even without
a "practical" major.

Brown is full of great professors, but you'll have to work a little harder to get to know them than you did in high school. If you're the kind of person who waits for teachers to initiate contact with you, you will have to learn to go to office hours, email your profs about questions, get yourself into the discussion sections they lead, etc. If you're already pro-active and good at initiating contact, then it won't be hard to get to know a lot of profs here. I've had some amazingly friendly and helpful professors in my first year at Brown, including the chorus prof who invited, in turn, each class (freshmen, sophomores etc) to his house near campus for homecooked dinner. It was awesome.

The Amtrak station is about a 15 minute walk down the hill, and a major bus station is about a 5 minute walk down. It's easy to take trains or busses wherever you want to go, but when you come here for the first time, it won't be pratical to take aaaall your stuff to move into your dorm all on a train. You can either ship most of it ahead of time and come by train or plane, or have your parents drive you in a van or something.

Your French score isn't great, but instead of re-taking it, I'd recommend taking a math SAT II. Although Brown doesn't require it, a lot of colleges like to see it, especially if you can take IIC. You should also work hard on improving your math SAT I score.

Also, I'm a little confused about your GPA. If your 3.8 is unweighted, then why is it out of 4.33 instead of 4.0? Is this some system I don't know about? Approximately what is your class rank?

Good luck, and feel free to post any more questions about Brown!

ilovebrown, thanks for responding . apparently i'm having a little difficulty with keyboard shortcuts today.
your information was very helpful, especially in regard to comparative literature. if time, money, and stamina allow, i'd like to major or minor in ir and comp lit to get truly global perspective of life and people.

i know i messed up a second time, but i guess you all know what i mean.

my school is unranked- we vote for valedictorians out of the top five (considering uw gpas, i think) and the top five percent (of a class of 720) get an asterisk next to their names. until then, it's a mystery the school will reveal only to colleges and scholarships that require it.

passionflower8 -- fyi, you can go back and edit your posts after you write them, up to a certain amount of time after they've been submitted (not sure how long).

You vote for valedictorians? That's reeaally weird.

Do you have any idea what your rank is? Top 10% would be good.

Also, keep in mind that given our open curriculum, Brown does not have minors. You could double-major in IR and Comp Lit, or just have one major and take whatever classes you want in the other area without worrying about requirements.

I would make sure to proofread your apps...and maybe not submit them online...
