Lots of Questions

-Can one year of a good college GPA compensate for 4 of HS? Why? Is a good GPA and recs enough to get into a good school (in HS you need all kinds of other stuff)?

I'm a senior in HS who might transfer during college, so I'm not against this, but I'm just curious. I guess colleges just see all of HS as a predictor for college. Showing that you are capable IN college is more assertive data. I assume college is more challenging as well. How hard is it to get a solid 3.5+ GPA at an average college? Do college ECs play a big role? If not, why (they did in HS)?

-What is the deal with HS rejections?

Is it more difficult as a transfer to get into colleges that you were rejected from in HS? Why? How do they even remember you? If you show improvement, why wouldn't they just look at you in a whole new light?

-Importance of college

Does this play a big role? I've heard stories of people who went to cc and transferred to great schools. And obviously coming from a top school will look better. If you do well at a solid school that isn't necessarily a top school, can you still get into a top school? Do you have a better chance than a transfer from a cc?

-Importance of SAT

Can this help a lot? For instance, I took the SAT twice during HS and didn't do great because I didn't study at all. If I study and take it again before HS ends and do well, will this help a lot come transfer time? Do you advise taking it before HS ends or should I just take it when/if I decide to transfer?

-HS record

When you transfer do you still show colleges all that you did during HS? I mean ECs and stuff. Also, I'm guessing if I plan to transfer, my HS senior year will matter and could help me a lot. True?

-After a year?

How can you transfer after your freshman year in college? I'm confused on how this works considering in HS you apply for the next year and the college only receives your first semester grades. How can you apply for the next year with a year of grades? Would you transfer for like the second semester? How does this work?

Sorry for all of the questions...THANKS!!!

Read the first few pages of the sticky thread: Transfer Admissions 101.

When you are applying to transfer, you usually have to turn in your application about Feb-March before the fall that you want to attend. That means that the colleges will only see the fall semester grades and possibly mid-term grades for spring semester. Because of this, if you apply to transfer as a soph, you will only have completed one semester of college coursework when you apply. Thus, your HS record (particularly gpa and rigor of classes) and test scores will count more than what you have done in college. If you apply to transfer as a jr, your college coursework, LORs and ECs will be more important than what you did in HS.

How difficult it is to be admitted as a transfer depends on the school. The most selective ones like Stanford and Yale take only about 2% of transfer applicants, much lower than for freshman admissions. Other schools are more transfer friendly, there's really a large range, so it's hard to make generalizations.
