LOTS of questions.

I really love what I know of Mills College, but it's hard to find a lot of information about the school so I thought I'd ask you all your thoughts.

Do you feel safe on campus? I hear Oakland is a dangerous city and I'm wondering if the security is good, etc.? (I'm from Denver, so I'm not totally naive about living in a city)

How difficult is the coursework at Mills? I am a pretty good student (Mainly A's, 3.6 weighed GPA) but I wouldn't want to be completely overwhelmed. I am taking 4 AP classes and 1 community college class this year, and last year took 4 AP's last year and 2 community college courses. Would I be able to transition pretty easily to Mills level work?

How active is the social life at Mills? How easy is it too meet guys/students from other schools your freshman year? Also what are the students like? Friendly, etc. I’m can be very shy at times any info you could give me on this would be great!

How is the fashion scene on campus? I have a casual interest in sewing and fashion and I'm wondering if I would be completely out of place with those kinds of interests. (To give you an idea people say I dress like Audrey Hepburn/Alexa Chung/Jane Birkin – Pretty but simple, somewhat boyish at times, and practical).

Any questions you could answer would be greatly appreciated!!

I’m not a Mills Student - I’ve only visited the campus. So I can’t answer your questions about the difficulty of the classes or the fashion scene. I can, however, comment on campus security.

The school isn’t in the nicest neighborhood. However, the security is excellent and once you get on the campus you totally forget about the world outside. The campus is isolated from the surrounding community by fences, hedges, and large sections of forest area. The buildings on campus are far from the edges. You can’t hear or see the traffic or anything else going on off campus. From the inside, you can’t even tell that there are fences.

I also felt very safe there because of the attentiveness of the campus security people. There is a gate you have to go through to get into campus - and that’s the only entrance entrance. They check student ids at the gate. If you want to bring a guest on campus, you have to let them know he or she is coming. Also, if you are out in Oakland or elsewhere nearby, you can call them and ask for a van that they have to come pick you up, even if it is late at night.

I would say that Mills, despite its location, is the safest campus I’ve visited. The school takes its students’ security seriously, and it shows.

Hey there Zoezoe,

I’m a student at Mills and I hope I can answer a few of your questions.

Mills is a great school first of all, and I am glad you are considering attending. With your GPA it seems like you will get in, but shoot for more A’s this semester and you might get a scholarship with an acceptance letter ;)

I feel completely safe on campus…but that’s not to say it’s in a safe neighborhood. It’s completely okay during the day and I have walked around the neighborhoods and to local businesses before. Also, there is a bus stop directly outside the gate so it’s easy to get around. However, you can hear the traffic at night sometimes and yes, you can hear gun shots and police sirens. This is ONLY at night, usually around 12 or 1 AM, so you wouldn’t be out and about the neighborhood anyway.

It seems like academically you would be able to transfer well. I am not sure on your major and that plays a large roll on your class difficulty. I am majoring in Public Policy and minoring in Sociology.

Socially, it’s great if you are willing to make the effort. The campus is dead on the weekend with a lot of girls going home since they live in the area. But, we all get bus passes as part of our tuition which gives us unlimited rides on the AC transit buses, and we have the private Mills shuttle that takes us to Berkeley campus, BART, and the hospital. Transportation is not hard. Meeting guys is also pretty easy, Mills usually has a dance once a month and usually guys from Cal Maritime Naval Academy attend (yummy!). Also, there are soooo many activities that they host for students throughout the semesters. No worries. Also, for being shy, you will live on campus in an LLC (living learning community) and you’ll have two hall events a month, so you’ll make friends in a jiffy.

Fashion scene, it really goes to all spectrum. Anything you wanna wear go for it. People will probably be impressed, but never criticize. It goes from casual, to mideval, to designer. You’ll be fine.

Good luck and let me know if you have anymore questions.

Hey, I got into to Mills and I’m really interesting in going, but I’ve haven’t visited yet (I’m actually going to the overnight thing in 2 weeks). But I was just wondering what the girls are like at Mills? Is there a specific type of girl who is commonly found at mills?

Congrats on getting accepted into Mills. I’ve been waiting to hear from them for, but it doesn’t seem like they have gotten all of my files even though I send them off in December.

How did you know you got accepted? Did they send an email or letter or did it tell you on the Mills Portal website?

If I’m accepted it would love to attend that overnight trip, but I just want to know I got in first.

Thanks, and I got a big packet thingy in the mail that said I was in, I would email them and just ask what the deal is! Though it did take them a long time to get all of my stuff. And yea you should go on the overnight, it seems like it will be a lot of fun!

Thanks for telling me that. It sounds like you’re happy to get in there. I think if they accept me, I would decide to attend. I sent my stuff off a while ago, and they have not gotten it yet according to the portal. But I’ll just be patient. College seems really exciting.
