Opinions on LA tech? They offer a full ride scholarship which I think is pretty popular but heard their academics are pretty mediocre and am worried. And know anything about Ruston?
What’s your intended major? Engineering at LaTech is decent. Ruston is literally in the middle of nowhere. Nearest airport is Monroe, about 40 miles east. Nearest metropolitan airports are Jackson, Mississippi and Memphis, Tennessee. Keep in mind that LaTech operates on the quarter system calendar.
@LakeWashington my intended major is Chemistry. I hear from students there they’re pretty good. I just am so sold by the convenience of the full ride that i can’t decide between striving for a University of California or go to LAT.
@anionforanion I know I’m late
I have the full ride scholarship here at Tech, and let me tell you, it is wonderful. I actually get paid to go to school! As stated, Ruston is small. Tech is a notorious suitcase school (nobody is here on weekends), but that’s a pro and con in itself. I am majoring in engineering at the moment, and Tech’s engr/science programs are considered upper echelon. The chemistry faculty is very enjoyable and knowledgeable, better than math or business.
If you haven’t already decided, I hope I helped! If you have any other, more specific questions, feel free to ask!!
@Trevlay OMG! Do you have a tumblr or anything where I can better access you for questions, haha? Sigh. I totally missed my chances and didn’t apply in time for the full ride. It’s past the January deadline, so my loss. I thought I wouldn’t go cause its too far but now im looking for ones in the south again and feel so upset I wasted my chance.
Contact the admissions office and ask for an extension of time to file the application for the full ride. Let them know that you’re ARE REALLY interested in matriculating at LaTech.
@LakeWashington I don’t even have good enough SAT scores to win it. Do you think they’d let?
Sounds you like do not qualify for it. Well, the overall cost for a non-resident of Louisiana is relatively low anyway. Are the respective costs of attendance for the two schools equivalent for you?
@LakeWashington Which two schools? The WUE ones?
U of California and LaTech.
@LakeWashington I was dumb and didn’t apply to any UCs. Only CSUs.
There are many good CSUs.
@“Erin’s Dad” Too late now
I was trying to say you shouldn’t say “only” CSUs. They are good schools.
@“Erin’s Dad” I didn’t even mean it like that. Saying, no UCs, just CSUs. Dumb for jsut applying to CSUs and not UCs for more options.
@Trevlay, I have a question about a comment you made in an earlier post. You said that Tech’s engr/science programs are considered upper echelon. My nephew lives in Louisiana and is very interested in engineering. He’s a high school sophomore this year and is looking seriously at instate engineering programs - of course, the problems with TOPS may not make staying instate nearly as attractive in the future. I was just wondering if your comment was based on objective criteria or on your perception from being involved in the program. I truly am not trying to be rude or snarky, just trying to help him explore his options. My daughter is completing her first year at Georgia Tech. We have been involved in many discussions regarding top engineering programs over the past few years. Unfortunately, Louisiana Tech was never a part of any of those conversations. We do not live in Louisiana. The upper echelon of undergraduate engineering programs seems to be MIT, Cal Tech, Berkeley, Stanford, GA Tech, U Michigan, and - depending on the type of engineering - Purdue, U Wisconsin-Madison, Cornell, UT-Austin, Texas A&M. Certainly rankings aren’t everything and someone’s personal experience in the program is extremely valuable. However, rankings do influence the perception of the value of a degree in the marketplace. If my nephew goes out of state, he’ll take on more debt, of course. He’s not particularly interested in LSU, though getting in the Honors College may cause him to take a more serious look. If he decides to take on more debt, he’ll want to make sure that his return on investment is significant enough to make it worth the additional cost. That’s why I was just wondering if you could provide any other objective info regarding the value of an undergraduate engineering degree from Louisiana Tech. Thanks! And I’m wondering where the original poster decided to go!
