Love the schools..but they are super SUPER reaches..

I am applying to Cornell, Georgetown, Colgate, NYU, BU, Trinity College, and George Washington University.

Issues= As a freshman I was out from November to the beginning of February because of major knee surgery. I originally entered high school an honors kid on scholarship, but after receiving minimal help from my school in regards to my absence my grades plummeted. As an underclassmen I struggled to get the grades I knew I could get because I had to teach myself basically 3 months of work from all of my classes. However, as a junior and senior my grades have been good, so I decided I would apply to those schools (along with my safteys SUNY Purchase, New Paltz, and Univeristy of Rhode Island) because even though I know I have a .0002 % chance I love them.

GPA = 3.2

Freshman year= 84 average
Sophomore year = 85 average (mainly because I was in Spanish II without knowing Spanish I ><)
Junior year= 91
Senior year= 93 - 95

APUSH = 3 (I didn't take the class, but I took the test just to take it)

SAT (super scored)

Critical Reading = 640
Math = 630
Writing = 640
Composite = 1910

SAT II's

Lit = 650
U.S History = 680

Senior year courses

AP English
AP Government and Politics
AP Psychology
Pre Calculus
Poetry
Health (required)
Gym (required)
Sacred Art and Christianity (required)
Human Sexuality and Love (required)

Extracurricular Activities

I am Editor-in-Chief of my high schools award winning newspaper.
(the past 13 years we have been voted #1 in the Brooklyn-Queens Diocese except one year we were second)

I am President of the Quill and Scroll Society ( The National Journalism Honor Society)

I participated in The-N teen press conference. Stars from the shows Degrassi and Beyond the Break were there getting their shows out to the teens.

I received a Full Scholarship to Study Abroad in Germany the summer before my junior year.

I am Treasurer of the German Club.

I started a book club with teens in my community. Through this I organized and managed a book exchange.

I took French classes over the summer in Manhattan, and I am currently teaching myself Italian.

Volunteer Work

Elementary School After Care program = 120 hours
Tutoring 10th to 12th grade= 420 hours
School Volunteer (Open House, Guidance Office, etc.) = 120 hours

Teacher Recommendations

The first one is amazing my English teacher, that I absolutely adore, wrote it. I had him for English 11 honors and now for Poetry (that is why I took the class!)

The second should be pretty good he had me as a freshman, when I went through my surgery, then again as a junior and again for drivers ed.

My Essay

My friends have been getting angry at me lately because I have slaved over my essay. I realize that this is my only real way to be able to show the colleges that despite my low GPA I am a great fit for them! I made my essays perfect. Everyone I showed my essays too either said they were the best they ever seen or stopped talking to me because they were jealous ( I have no clue why my GPA is horrendous).

For Cornell, my uncle went there and sent in a letter for me. I am not exactly sure what he put, but I didn't think it could hurt.

Thank you for taking the time to help me out. I have no clue what is going to happen. I know my chances are horrendous at best, but I wanted to see your thoughts (especially concerning the surgery factor ><).

I don't know what the deadlines are, but you might try schools that may be similar to your current list. If you love GWU and Georgetown, try American. You like NYC, try Manhattanville and Fordham. Quinnapac is a lot like Colgate and Trinity.

If you're full pay, those schools will welcome you with open arms.

NYU might not be that much of a reach for you. I've seen people get in with similar stats

Ehh... the GPA is still pretty low. 1 AP test and no AP classes before senior year will really hurt you. SAT scores are mehh.. NYU, Cornell, Georgetown are definitely reaches in my opinion.

There were no AP classes that I could take before sophomore year, really. I am an English & History person so those APs are only for seniors. The only AP that I could have taken, but didn't was APUSH though I took the AP exam.

collegeapp09 you said you think that Cornell, Georgetown and NYU are reaches..does that mean you think I have a shot at all? I know college admissions are unpredictable but still a reach status for those schools is better than what I thought I had .

Oh okay. I assumed that your school had lots of AP courses. Never mind then about that.

Yeah still they are reaches, but hey, you've always got a chance! I mean if your essays blow them away, you never know! Although colleges look past GPAs, a 3.1 might be too low. It's always great to apply, though. You never know if you don't try.

Best of luck.

Thanks so much! I'm trying to keep optimistic but with my GPA + college admissions process as a whole..well I need it to be March 31st already ....Any one else reading this....Please let me know what you think!!!

Biggest weakness is the test scores. Try and take either SAT-I or SAT-IIs later this month. Theres still time to go in as a stand by.

I have a chance thread: <a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/622237-so-am-i-totally-screwed-4.html%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/622237-so-am-i-totally-screwed-4.html</a></p>

Pretty decent chances at most of these schools. Cornell, GW and Georgetown seem to be your biggest reaches. As for the others, I would say pretty good chance, especially if the essay is fabulous (which it sounds like it is.) =]

Good Luck!

you got some reaches, but if u explain your situation it makes ur chances more realistic. The AP thing hurts majorly, colleges love to see that you challenge yourself. SAT scores are fine, they are not gonna toss out your app. b/c of them. Rely on essays and rec's

<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/623727-chances-would-appreciated-chances-back.html%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/623727-chances-would-appreciated-chances-back.html</a></p>

Thank you all for your responses..My school offers a lot of science APs but science isn't something I excel in unfortunately...I also have a few honors classes besides that ..My guidance counselor put my course load as very rigorous (being second only to most rigorous) on my common app rec form...

Universities want students that are different and challenge themselves, not only academically, but regarding other matters in life as well. You have some nice ECs and good community service that might help you in the end. But if your essay really is that great, I certainly think that you'll tip over the edge.

How do you think the schools will deal with the issue my surgery presented?
