We visited Texas State last year, and now it’s all my son talks about. I’d love to hear from some freshmen there now or their parents. Is the school worthy of the hype?

My D is a current sophomore as BFA MT, and for us it’s a resounding yes. I could go on about the faculty, as they are wonderful, but its also the connections that they have as well as the supporting atmosphere that surrounds them. As parents, I feel like we hit the lotto with this program and can’t wait to see what becomes of Kaitlin’s first graduating class of seniors at the end of this school year.

My son is a freshman. He loves it so far. I’m going to use that ambiguous word “fit”. It fit him for different reasons it might not fit someone else. It is everything we had thought it was and everything he wanted. Feel free to private message me if you have specific questions.

Absolutely! My son is a current senior and a part of the first class that Kaitlin auditioned and accepted. Since day one, his opportunities have been tailored toward his individual strengths and career goals, just has they have been for his classmates (it is the opposite of “cookie-cutter”). He could not have found a better fit, but that does not mean it is going to be the best fit for everyone.

I concur 100% with the “hit the lotto” sentiment. My daughter is a freshman and couldn’t be happier with the training, the atmosphere, the relationships. Kaitlin says that she is not teaching musical theatre but training working actors. Everything I’ve seen, heard and experienced so far validates this. And the value proposition is unbelievable.

Sorry, a bit slow with my response. S is a BFA Acting junior at TxState. His experience there has been better than he could have imagined. He has had some wonderful opportunities while at TxState, in both school productions and community theatre. Although he’s on the acting side, he has a great relationship with Kaitlin and Jim and has worked with them a fair amount. Kaitlin has arranged for him to take a dance class every semester (a strength for him), nuturing his individual talents. Last summer he went with the BFA’s to the Oregon Shakespeare Festival (Shakespeare is his passion), and it was an amazing experience for him. He is very, very busy (“sleep is overrated”) but loving it. Echo what the others have said about the caring/supportive environment. A warning, though, for those who live east of the Mississippi – Texas is FAR. S hasn’t been home much (stayed in San Marcos last summer because he was in a community production and has returned early for xmas break both previous years for rehearsals for shows). So my husband and I take turns going down there from our home in NY State to see him perform (I’m going to see his show in early November, yay!). Never would we have imagined when we started the college process almost 4 years ago that S would end up at Texas State, but it has been a blessing for him as an actor and for us in terms of finances. Please message me if you have any questions.

I am a current Freshman in the MT department here at Texas State. In complete and absolute honesty this is one of the best training programs in the country. Kaitlin and Jim and every single member of the faculty here has our best interests at heart every single day and we are constantly striving here not only to be better artists, but to be better human beings. That’s what I think is the driving force of the newfound popularity Txstate is getting from prospective MT applicants. There is this atmosphere of happiness that exudes from all the students, not just because we are receiving high end training, but because we’re being asked everyday “What can you do to make a difference?” or “How can you make someone else’s life better today?”

Texas State’s Musical Theatre training is top level, considering we are being taught by Broadway professionals everyday. But the real reason why it flourishes is because the training is so much more than being ready for New York or wherever you go – it’s about being ready for the world.

I’ve never felt more happy or in better hands. I wake up everyday being unbelievably grateful I found this place and that I picked it over all the other MT depts. This one takes the cake. Kaitlin and Jim, and the students here, are life changing. :)

Thanks for posting this WAstateGirl! That is exactly what my daughter and I felt when we were there last weekend! Kaitlin and Jim genuinely care about each and every one of you and all of you care right back. It’s impossible to fake that for appearances for an entire day. We knew it was absolutely true!

My daughter is also a freshman MT student and has experienced so much growth. The program deserves the hype it receives and the new Performing Arts Center is amazing. When your child is apart of this program, you truly feel as though you’ve won the lottery. It’s an opportunity of a lifetime to work with the best in the industry.

My D, husband and I just got back from the final weekend of auditions at Texas State. I saw there are several moms of current students that are posting here. I don’t know which kids are yours but I wanted to take a moment and tell you how warm and inviting the students were this weekend. Without exception the students were positive, willing to help out and answer any questions. I know we are in a field that focuses on talent, but as a mom I wanted to let you know what impressed me the most was the love and support and enjoyment of life that they were putting forth. It made a good weekend into a GREAT weekend. Thank you all!

The moms are just OK. The real credit goes to the dads. :-).

;) Very cool dads!
