Is this possible? I dont want to join a frat (mainly because i am to cheap). Are there still plenty of booze-filled partys? where are they? what about soroity partys? can you get into the frats anyways?

I don't go to Vandy, but you def. don't have to join a frat to go to their parties...the way to go if you ask me

i think you do, if you are a guy

greek parties at the houses are open access. all you have to do is wait in line (assuming you don't know someone who can get you in) and show your vandy id. sororities don't really have "booze-filled" parties, so cross that one out.

and there are a ton outside of frat row, too. as long as you know more than 10 people on campus, you'll have more than enough parties to go to.

oh, and vupd is cracking down a lot on underage drinking this year (and presumably in the future as well), so drink responsibly, even if not legally... (shh...don't tell brad i said that) you don't want to go getting written up and having that letter sent to your parents the first week of school.

personally if you want to go to the sweet parties i think you have to be in a frat. there will be no off campus housing after this year (although some seniors have said they might be able to get it somehow), so it will probably be even harder to find places to party that arent frats. there are bars but those arent really parties per se. its so much better if you're in a frat, you can party with them 5 nights a week or more, there is always something going on with the frats. if you are looking for an off campus house party scene, try a bigger state school.

Also, just because you can get into a frat party doesn't mean you can drink their beer. Most houses enforce that you know a brother to get a beer, especially if you're a guy.

Thursday nights are always downtown, this year at either Fuel or Bar Car.

There is an alternative scene on campus if you aren't as "fratty." Keep in mind that only a third of guys are in frats. Wherever you have friends and a handle, there's a party.

1) most of these replies are good.
2) off campus housing will be around for a few more years.
3) i wouldn't rule out a fraternity just yet. as an academic, you must know that it's important to keep an open mind and most of the fraternities can help alleviate dues in a variety of ways.

There are definitely ways to party without being in a frat (ex: Towers suite parties), but if you are looking to enjoy outrageous parties, you should definitely be in a frat. Some of the frats won't let guys in, and as mentioned before, even if they let you in, you often have to know a brother to get beer. And each sorority usually only has three parties a semester at off-campus venues, and only 21+ can drink.
