Lovely place to go to school

Armed robbery reported in Harvard Yard

Actually it truly is. Crime can and does happen on all campuses and one should always take proper precautions. The victim in this case was someone who is not affiliated with Harvard and who was alone at 2:45 AM. I don’t recommend anyone walk around alone at that time of day in any urban area.

The advantage to a middle of nowhere school is that armed robberies probably won’t occur as much. The disadvantage is “ZzZzZzZzZz”. you pick.

Walking alone in a fairly populated area in the middle of the night = what’d ya think?

I guess Big Green’s premise is that Harvard isn’t a nice place to go to school because of this. Puh-leez

All students received an email within the last half hour of an additional armed robbery incident. The relevant portion is as follows:

“This morning at approximately 1:55 AM, a Cambridge Police Department officer while on routine patrol in Harvard Square observed four males acting in a suspicious manner on Brattle Street. As the CPD officer approached the individuals to investigate, one of the males fled down Brattle Street towards Church Street. While fleeing the unidentified male displayed a gun and fired once at the CPD officer. The CPD officer, who was unharmed in the incident, arrested the individual after a brief foot chase for assault with intent to murder and other charges related to the incident. Upon further investigation, it was determined that the suspect was robbing the three individuals, later identified as Harvard College students. The victims were unharmed in the incident.”

I walk around on campus at all hours, and I’ve yet to be robbed. The poor fellow was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Or perhaps I just look menacing. I’m told I can be quite scary.

There seem to be an increase in robberies in all urban areas and it is likely a result of our current economic woes. Certainly house robberies are way up in my neighborhood since the Wall Street meltdown. So while it is of concern, my guess is, Harvard students are viewed as affluent and easy marks. I hope the college increses security patrols around the campus.

Dang, he was trying to pull a triple robbery?

So this robbery makes Harvard a bad place to go to school? Get over it, **** like this happens in any urban area. If this makes Harvard a bad school, then Yale must be a downright **** hole.

Yes, and he very well would have succeeded had the officer not been present. Very few are willing defend themselves when confronted with a weapon.

Also, one must offer a major commendation to the officer for both recognizing suspicious behavior and actually snaring the offender in a foot pursuit.

^ I was actually just at a meeting where we were talking about how the officer had quite the courage to chase after an armed man right after he was shot at. Takes balls to do that, and hopefully this is the same man who was responsible for the robbery at Thayer.

Indeed, New Haven’s crime rate is very much more elevated than that of Cambridge.

[Cambridge Profile | Cambridge MA | Population, Crime, Map](Cambridge Profile | Cambridge MA | Population, Crime, Map)

[New Haven Profile | New Haven CT | Population, Crime, Map](New Haven Profile | New Haven CT | Population, Crime, Map)

(Unfortunately, the statistics in the second hyperlink have not been recently updated, but those available clearly yield the fact that New Haven has a much more exorbitant rate of crime relative to Cambridge’s.)

I was actually quite curious if this was the same individual who had committed that robbery.

^And of course, she’ll totally agree to that.

(Previous poster deleted post.)

People with guns mean business. If someone tried to rob me with a just a knife I’d wreck their ****.

^I think being stabbed would hurt more than being shot. But what do I know?

^It doesn’t matter which one hurts more. The goal is to not get hit by either of them, and an untrained guy with a knife is a lot less dangerous than an untrained guy with a glock.
