Loving everything about college... except the 24 hour day

I'm really lucky in that I love so many elements of college... But has anyone figured out a way to do everything that's important to you? With reasonable time management, should one be able to do these things:

--Be a responsible student/do well in courses/learn

--Lead a weekly children's program and another student interest group

--Be significantly involved in several other community service and other groups I love

--Have time at least on weekends to hang out with my friends/go out

--Swim most days

--Help out some with duties at home occasionally (living at a college in the same city as home)

Does this sound reasonable w/ decent time management?

Well it depends on your major, what classes you take, and what university you go to.

Your schedule sounds reasonable, but I would try to put things on gradually. First things first, get good grades. Then as you get better at studying, you can add things.

Some of the things you might have to sacrifice some weeks:
swimming
weekend fun

That's not to say that you can't do it. I'm just saying that you have to skip these activities during some weeks because they are optional.

So to answer your question, if you have a major in a college that isn't extremely difficult, you should be fine: I recommend you read a book about time-management and take things one at a time though.

Thanks for the response... I'm a sciences major at a top 10 school. I actually have been doing the things on that list already but am trying to decide whether they're all reasonable to continue for next semester. I always feel as though I'm short on time, but I'm hoping to conclude that that's just as a result of poor time management skills.... especially since many of them are commitments at this point. Don't get me wrong though... I love my life as it is. I'd just like to sleep more than 3-4 hours occasionally ;-)

I would say that if you aren't suceeding right now at getting sleep and doing al of these things, you should make a priority list and what ever is at the bottom, stop doing it for this next semester. After one semester if you miss it then go back to doing it, but if you feel relieved and are getting 6-8 hours of sleep instead of 3-4, then it wasn't something you needed to be doing.

Amen to the above suggestion. Prioritize. If you're doing too much for that week and NEED to sleep, then skip something the next day so you can catch up. People understand that you're a college student, a human being, and you need to rest. Except for professors :) Definitely keep up with swimming- it seems to be the only time that you have to yourself. That's very important in keep one's sanity- time to yourself.

Don't worry, I complain a lot and say that we need 36 hours day!

Remember that it is good to have extracirriculars, but too much can be bad as well...
YOU are your number one priority and sleep is one of the most important things for a human being to do. As equine said, you need to prioritize and that goes back to my first statement. I am assuming you want to go to grad school and that is the reason why you are doing all those things, but the admissions committees don't want to see some android who completed A,B,C,D,E, and F, they would rather see a person who had a lot of interest in A,B, and C and didn't do D,E, or F. Just remember by lacking sleep, you are only hurting yourself...

I agree with hopkinslax. Don't overdo yourself. Just take it easy and add/drop courses/activities as needed. No need to cram everything in at once. You should be able to have at least a few hours where you can just unwind and relax for the day.

I have some ideas about what I'd like to do after college. I may go to grad school later, but that possibility is not why I'm doing any of the things that I'm doing. I really do enjoy these things--many of them are activities I've wanted to do for a while and am now delighted to have the opportunity in college. I'm pretty good at taking time just to waste with my friends.... and then finding a crazy "to-do" list at 2:00 AM, but I'm not the only one. Several of my friends are also very involved. One of them decided to take a week and just do schoolwork and take time for himself. He was amazed at how much time he had.... but also so missed everything else that he went right back to his old ways.

Has anyone else figured out a way to do all you want to do and have enough time?

You probably won't be able to do every single thing you want to do there. Just prioritize and add/drop as needed. For example, I am applying for an internship in my field, in one club, and taking 15 hours (but they're all higher level classes). I want to do all of this if possible and even join more clubs, but I know I might not have time for all of that. If I don't, then I may drop a course or drop the club I am in and so on.
